SEGA Forever Brings 5 Classic Titles To Mobile For Free

Posted on June 21, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA has announced the rumored SEGA Forever, a mobile-centric collection of classic titles spanning over 20 years of releases and three console generations.  With 5 SEGA exclusive Genesis titles available at launch – Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, Altered Beast and Kid Chameleon – there’s quite a few different genres represented. SEGA Forever games support features like cloud saves, Bluetooth controllers, save states and offline play regardless of the player’s advertising status. As with the Crazy Taxi port released a couple of weeks ago – games in SEGA Forever collection will be supported by periodic in-game advertisements, however, these can be removed for $1.99 USD per title.

SEGA is promising to release more classic titles from the Master Drive, Genesis, Saturn and even 1999’s Dreamcast (a personal favorite) at some point down the line.  Players should expect new releases every two weeks or so but SEGA has not yet confirmed any future titles for the service.

Check out some media below and make sure to check the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for SEGA Forever when it launches tomorrow.

12 In 1 Retro Console, The Retro Freak, Coming Soon From FunStock Retro

Posted on March 4, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Who doesn’t love a good 8-bit or 16-bit from their childhood? Perhaps checking out a console that existed before you did? Retro games can introduce you to genres that are no longer considered mainstream or help you relive some of the definitive games that helped shape the games industry into what it is today.

Imagine having access to the physical libraries of 12 different consoles all from different manufacturers from the past 30+ years, this is possible thanks to the upcoming release of the Retro Freak from UK retailer FunStock Retro you will now be able to have up to 16 consoles under your television without a jungle of tangled cables.

In terms of compatibility the Retro Freak supports cartridges from the following systems:

  • NES
  • SNES
  • Famicom (Japanese SNES)
  • SNES (PAL)
  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Color
  • GBA
  • SEGA Mega Drive
  • SEGA Genesis
  • PC Engine
  • Japanese Turbo Graphics 16

Direct emulation via the included cartridge slots isn’t the only thing that the Retro Freak will bring to the crowded console clone scene. With built-in USB ports this neat little device will support a number of USB enabled controllers including those from the Xbox One and PlayStation. If you’ve got a USB genesis or SNES controller those are supported as well. Each system’s controller layout and be customized and this little white box even gives players the ability to add turbo functions through the system’s menus.

Here are a few shots of the Retro Freak system menus:

Retro Freak also gives players an extra degree of control with its ability to copy a game cartridge directly to a mounted SD card – removing the need to keep cartridges cluttered around the television like you did when you were 8. If one of your older cartridges no longer has a working SRAM battery, making manual saves impossible, the Retro Freak can back up saves directly to a mounted SD card.

More information about the Retro Freak are available at the Funstock Retro website. Currently the Retro Freak is priced at 169.99 EURO / $240 CDN and offers free shipping within Europe or to North America for $5.99.

Broken Bootlegs- Command and Conquer beta

Posted on July 17, 2016 by Erika

Command & Conquer Beta Title

Broken Bootlegs is a weekly series covering unlicensed games (also known as bootleg games) for mainly 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. This week’s edition covers something that could have really interesting: a Command and Conquer beta for the Sega Genesis!

I’ve played a few RTS games over the years, and love the heck out of em. Myth 2, and the Age of Empires series immediately comes to mind, but there’s one series that I have yet to play: Command and Conquer. While this beta is in a very incomplete state, it can give players a small look of how the original game plays. Developed with the Tomsoft MegaDrive SDK, Command and Conquer was an attempt to backport the original DOS game to the Genesis. The reasons why development stopped are currently unknown, and is probably lost to time.Read More

Broken Bootlegs- King of Fighters Genesis/MD

King of Fighters 99

Broken Bootlegs is a weekly series covering unlicensed games (also known as bootleg games) for mainly 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. This week’s entry brings one of the more well-known fighting game series to the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive: King of Fighters!

While on a neverending quest to find fighting games to play some years back, I eventually started exploring outside of the realm of Capcom and rediscovered SNK since I played Samurai Showdown IV back when it was new. From Art of Fighting, to Fatal Fury, to King of Fighters, I fell in love with the older KOF games, with ’98 being one of my favorites from that group. As I didn’t have regular access to arcade hardware, I looked to seeing what ports were out there at the time, and my only options were to get it for the PS1 or Dreamcast, neither of which I had about a decade ago. Low and behold, I found three games for the Sega Genesis- King of Fighters ’98, King of Fighters ’99, and King of Fighters 2000. While they’re bootlegs, they provide an interesting take on the King of Fighters series as a whole.Read More
