Prepare to clear a space on your desk next spring. Atari has announced THE 800XL, a faithful full-size recreation of its best-selling 8-bit computer from 1983 — and unlike most of the mini-consoles cluttering the retro market, this one wants to be an actual computer again.
Designed by Retro Games Ltd. — the UK outfit behind the recent C64 and Spectrum revivals — and manufactured and distributed by PLAION REPLAI, THE 800XL keeps the look and feel of the original machine: a full-sized mechanical keyboard, a working cartridge slot, and Atari BASIC baked in, ready for your first (or fortieth) attempt at writing a program. Modern conveniences come along for the ride: HDMI output with PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz support, 4:3 and pixel-perfect display modes, optional CRT filters, four USB-A ports, USB-C power, and the ability to load games and software from USB flash drives as cartridge, disk, or cassette images. My first thought, honestly? I never learned BASIC beyond the two lines everyone typed from magazines in 1986, and this might finally be the excuse.

Under the hood it’s as much preservation as product. The cartridge slot takes most original Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE cartridges, and the machine supports software written for the entire Atari 8-bit line plus the Atari 5200 console — though note the 5200 stuff has to be side-loaded, since physical 5200 cartridges don’t fit the slot. You also get emulation-style quality-of-life features the 1983 original never dreamed of: four save slots per game and the ability to rewind gameplay by up to 30 seconds, whether you’re playing a built-in game, a side-loaded file, or a real cartridge.
Speaking of built-ins, there are 25 of them: Asteroids, Berzerk, Boulder Dash, Centipede, Missile Command, M.U.L.E., Star Raiders II, Miner 2049er, The Seven Cities of Gold, and a solid spread of third-party 8-bit favourites, plus two hidden titles — Castle Crisis and Super Breakout — that unlock when you connect an analogue controller. The box also includes an updated THECXSTICK joystick with seven extra action and function buttons tucked into the classic design, an HDMI cable, a USB-C power cable, and a quick guide.

“The 800XL represents an important moment in Atari’s history, when home computers were becoming a gateway to gaming, programming and creativity,” said Matt Burnett, Atari’s VP of Strategic Operations, in the official announcement on October 8. Retro Games Ltd. COO Stuart Chiplin added that the team wanted to capture not just how the original looked, but “the freedom it gave people to play, program and create.”
Pre-orders are open now through Atari, PLAION REPLAI, and retailers worldwide at USD $219.99 — roughly $314 CAD at current rates — with shipping set to begin on April 23, 2027. That’s a long wait, and it’s not pocket change, but a full-size machine with real keys and a real cartridge slot is a very different proposition from another HDMI stick pretending to be a computer. Do you still have your original Atari cartridges gathering dust in a box somewhere? This might be their second act.
