Some games wait decades for a second chance. This one waited for a console it never even got in the first place — and now, 39 years after the original, Final Fantasy is finally running natively on the Sega Saturn.
Homebrew developer TrekkiesUnite118 has released version 1.0.0 of his native Saturn port of the 1987 NES classic, finishing a project he first showed as an early prototype on December 31, 2020. This is not emulation: the port converts Entroper’s documented 6502 disassembly of the NES version directly into C using the Sega Basic Library, so the Saturn does the work.
The transparency part first, because it matters here. TrekkiesUnite118 coded the foundational systems by hand between 2020 and 2022 — the title screen, prelude, party creation, overworld engine, and battle system. For the rest, he used Anthropic’s Claude AI under strict rules and manual code review to translate the leftover assembly routines. That is his own SegaXtreme disclosure, reported exactly as he stated it: the human-built core came first, and the AI work was reviewed.
What you get is the full 1987 adventure, directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi and scored by Nobuo Uematsu, rebuilt for hardware Square never bothered with. The original launched in Japan in December 1987 and in North America in July 1990, and Square later ported it to just about everything else. The Saturn never got a look: when Square put Final Fantasy VII exclusively on PlayStation in 1996, it bypassed the Saturn entirely in the West. I love this kind of stubborn, unfinished-business energy.
It is not just a straight conversion, either. The NES release is notorious for broken math, where certain intelligence stats and elemental spells simply did nothing — this port adds optional toggles for those bugs, so you can play it fixed or faithful. Saving got an overhaul too: inns and tents still heal you, but saving now happens from the Start menu anywhere in towns or on the overworld, with three slots per device, including the Saturn’s internal save RAM, Backup RAM cartridges, and even the rare official Floppy Disk Drive. If you have waited thirty years for a reason to plug that drive in for a Square RPG, your ship has finally come in.
A few honest caveats. The port is a free patch utility on the SegaXtreme forum, and you must supply your own legally dumped US NES ROM to generate the Saturn disc image — the package contains no copyrighted assets, and TrekkiesUnite118 asks users to keep pre-built ISOs off ROM-sharing sites. He also notes he has not done a full playthrough yet, so expect the odd rough edge further in.
Still, a mainline Final Fantasy running natively on a Saturn, built by a fan over six years? That is the kind of preservation win this site exists to cheer on. Dusting off your Saturn for this one?
