Nintendo announced a new Mario Sports title headed to the 3DS next year in Mario Sports Superstars. I’ll be honest. I’m cautiously optimistic on this one.
The last true entry to have Mario and company in the sports world was Mario Tennis for the Wii U, but my last experience in a multi-sports title on Nintendo’s portable was the recently released Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Sure the game was a lot of fun, but some of the limitations in character selection left a sour taste in my mouth.
I’m hoping those past missteps aren’t repeated here.
Mario Sports Superstars is a five-sport compilation scheduled to launch next spring. The game includes full-fledged versions of baseball, tennis, golf, horse racing and 11-on-11 soccer games.
The game will include single-player tournaments for each sport, plus local and online multiplayer modes.
