Psyonix’s 2015 hit Rocket League has now blasted its way on to the Nintendo Switch in North America and is available digitally through the Nintendo e-shop. This release marks the first time that players can bring the excitement of rocket-powered soccer with cars anywhere with handheld mode.

This port of Rocket League was handled by the developers at Panic Button, who also provided the excellent port of 2016’s Doom for Bethesda (we’ll be covering that later in the week), so you know that Rocket League is in good hands. Players on the Switch can expect all of the additional updates, arenas, and cosmetics that Psyonix has released in the last 24+ months in addition to special Nintendo exclusive cosmetics.

Rocket League on Nintendo Switch is priced at $24.99 CDN on the Canadian e-shop and is available now. We’ve reached out to the publisher of the game for a promotional copy to provide you with impressions.

Rocket League Receiving New Dropshot Mode In Next Free Update

Posted on March 13, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Psyonix is bringing a brand new mode to Rocket League on March 22nd that does away with goalposts all together. Instead of scoring a goal on a traditional soccer net, the two teams of cars must dribble an electrified ball across the field to open up a hole on their opponents side of the arena. Once a goal is scored on the opponents’ side of things the floor closes back up and everything starts anew.  Oh, and just to make things even more interesting the ball isn’t only electrified but also the ball will continue to build up strength as it is successfully dribbled, building up its’ destructive potential.

Alongside the brand new mode the Dropshot update will bring with it a new stadium for the titular mode, called ‘Core 707’. Official live streams of Rocket League will be accessible via a “Live Now” button that Psyonix are adding to the game’s menu. There also six brand new achievements coming to the game as part of the Dropshot update.,

Rocket League originally launched in the summer of 2015 on PS4, Xbox One and PC where it quickly became a smash success with other 28 million players worldwide. Since then Psyonix has dropped several substantial free updates including the mutators, rumble and hoops updates. Paid DLC in the form of additional car parts & licensed Hot Wheels add-ons have also been made available over the course of the last year or so.

Here is the official trailer for Dropshot mode:

Call of Duty & FIFA 17 Maintain Top Sales Spots In First Week of 2017 In U.K

Posted on January 9, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

In the first post-holiday sales charts for the United Kingdom both the juggernaut Call of Duty and FIFA franchises have maintained their stranglehold on the top two sales positions heading into the second week 2017.

While established top contenders like COD may not have budged from the top spot the lower rankings did see quite a bit of a shuffle with Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 3 jumping up 7 places to claim the 5th spot this past week.  Also up in the charts  is Nintendo’s Pokemon Sun & Moon which climbed 4 ranks to clinch the 9th position in this week’s top ten.

Here are the top 10 games for the UK for the week ending January 7th:

  1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  2. FIFA 17
  3. GTA V
  4. Battlefield 1
  5. Forza Horizon 3
  6. Watch Dogs 2
  7. Mafia III
  8. Rocket League
  9. Pokemon Sun
  10. STEEP

Although I didn’t particularly care for Call of Duty’s repetitive rehash of Black Ops III’s mechanics it does seem to be quite popular with our European counterparts. Just this past weekend Jason reviewed Pokemon Sun & Moon – which he awarded an absolutely perfect score, 5 out 5 stars.

Did you play any of the U.K’s top ten games over the holidays? What are your top ten upcoming games for any platforms in 2017? Let us know in the comments section.

Rocket League Gets New Rumble Mode

Posted on September 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Psyonix’s surprise summer hit from 2015 recieves a brand new “rumble mode” that provides players with a whole new set of power-ups. 11 new randomized power-up give players new abilities that drastically changes how the rocket powered soccer title is played.

If you’re getting flashback to older racing titles from the 90s that included outrageous power-ups, like Extreme-G for the Nintendo 64, don’t worry you’re not alone. Here is a list of all of the power-ups available to players in the new “rumble mode”.

  • The Boot (Kicks an opponent’s car)
  • Disruptor (Forces the opponent to drive uncontrollably)
  • Freezer (Freezes the ball in-place)
  • Grappling Hook (Pulls you toward the ball)
  • Haymaker (Punches the ball)
  • Magnetizer (Attracts the ball to your car)
  • Plunger (Snaps the ball to your position)
  • Power Hitter (Hit everything harder)
  • Spike (Attach the ball to your car when you bump into it)
  • Swapper (Change positions on the field with your opponent)
  • Tornado (Sweep up the ball and cars into a giant funnel cloud)

Today’s update also introduces the “Crates & Keys” system that will allow players to unlock new skins and cosmetics through keys that are purchasable through optional micro-transaction. “Crate & Keys” is a similar micro-transaction model as popularized by Valve’s Counter Strike: Global Offensive and does not affect the core gameplay experience of Rocket League.  Keys will be sold for $1.49 USD for 1 or in bundles of 5, 10 or 20. Profits from the “Crate & Keys” system will be used to fund future e-sports prize pools for the Rocket League community.

Rocket League sound track to be released on Vinyl

Posted on July 18, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Now here is something which has peaked my curiosity. This morning in my email in box I find that  Psyonix has decided to release the Rocket League sound track. But, Psyonix being Psyonix they arent releasing it any normal way. Oh no, istead its coming out on a series of very unique, awesome looking vinyls. They will partner with iam8bit to release 3xLP’s later this summer.

Wait Records?

Yes that’s correct, Vinyl pressed records. The kind that the needle goes round on and makes the sound. So, here’s the deal. Created in partnership with pop culture retailers and creative house, iam8bit, The Vinyl Collection features custom artwork by Rocket League® community member, Dan Bronsema, who has illustrated both the front and back gatefolds of the album. The illustrations of this album are amazing, and the actual vinyl is going to 128 gram, so SUPER heavy. You wont have to worry about dropping this one and breaking it.

And just feast your eyes on how pretty these are! The attention to detail is great. I love how they used tired for the covers, and how each one has unique print on it. The art thats printed on the fold out is also beautiful, it features community membe Dan Bronsema.  fans can pre-order the The Vinyl Collection starting today RIGHT HERE I know I for one will be picking it up 75$ for a piece of art like this is a real deal for any rocket league lover.

Rocket League to get basketball mode

Posted on March 30, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Fan favorite Rocket League recently added morphs to their game, allowing players a fine grain of control over how the ball behaved, what shape it was, how much force boost had, and several other options. Included in these options was an icy preset for a hockey mode, which got me wondering, what else can we play with rocket cars? Well Psyonix has taken that answer to the next level announcing that this April they will be releasing a basketball mode for Rocket League.

So there you go, one tweet and the fans go wild. As usual Psyonix is delivering this content for free all of the people who already own Rocket League. The way Psyonix is putting out good solid free new conent cant help but remind me of the halcyon days of Halo 3 when it seemed like Bungie had a new map and game mode coming out every other week. A strong legacy to live up to. Personally I cant wait to give this mode a try, it appears that aerials will be more important as the ball must go “in to” the top of the net. See you on the court reader.

Cross-Platform Gameplay Is Finally A Reality On Xbox One, PS4/Xbox Cross-Play A Possibility

Posted on March 15, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Xbox One

Yesterday at GDC 2016 Microsoft announced that Xbox One players will finally be able to play online with their friends on other platforms starting this year. Developers will be able to bridge the platform gap between Windows 10 and Xbox One and the first game to support this new functionality is none other than last years’ surprise hit Rocket League.

Potentially the most shocking news is that Microsoft appears open to allowing players on longtime rival Sony’s PlayStation Network to play against one another at some point in the future. In the official blog post on the Xbox.com News Wire, Chris Charles the Director of ID @ Xbox, described the possibility of cross-console online gameplay as an “open invitation”.

Here’s his full section regarding the possibility of cross-platform play:

Cross-Network Play
First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.
Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

Rocket League launched on PlayStation 4 in July of 2015, the Xbox One version went live last month on February 17th. The game across all three platforms (PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC) has sold over 4 million units and earned developer Psyonix over $70 million.

Someone has finally gotten outside of a Rocket league map

Posted on February 1, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Wasteland is one of many Rocket League maps, it happens to be themed after, A wasteland… big surprise right? Well now someone has manged to get in to the world outside of rocket leagues shielded and enclosed arena, and see what the world outside looks like. The person in question is Redditor UncomfortableNPC who posted the video on the quite active Rocket League subreddit.

Usually when you exit a levels geometry, you will find a nice skybox, some unpainted terrain, or a few unused assets. If you are really lucky you might find a testing room where the games physics were tested, or something really special like an easteregg room containing developer names or something. Not so with Rocket League, as UncomfortableNPC’s little car that could goes on for several minutes exploring what appears to be a well textured world. It contains large structures, a rolling expansive desert, and some poorly textured sand and water. In the background massive metal structures dominate the sky. What are these alien structures? Why do they exist all the way outside of the arean? Who built them? We may never know, but its clear the developers of Rocket League put sometime in to the environs outside of their soccer fields.

Take a look at the full video below the jump and judge for yourself, do you think this is the start of some Rocket League lore? I for one would love to know why there are people in this world who are smashing up cars (rc or otherwise) chasing around a giant ball that explodes in a goal.

Psyonix has made over 50 million on Rocket League

Posted on December 18, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Developer Psyonix’s amazing super powered ultra fast sports racing car game is crazy fun. Dont belive me? Read my review or check my steam library and see all the play time. However it also seems that at least according to the Wall Street Journal its also crazy profitable.  In an interview with the WSJ Psyonix said ““Rocket League” has raked in nearly $50 million in revenue and amassed more than 8 million registered players since its July launch on PC’s and Ps4s”

This is pretty unprecedented for an indie game from a small studio with out a backing by a major publisher. the report also details how Psyonix spent over two years and a figure close to two million dollars to develop Rocket League. That figure is quite large for a studio considered by many to be an “indie”. When asked how they manged studio founder Dave Hagewood said ” “We paid the bills by working on some of the biggest games in the industry,  including Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War.”

Perhaps most interesting is that the article also tell us that the most recent addition to Rocket league, the famed deloran of Back to the Future, was not something Psyonix sought out. Rather Universal (the studio that owns the property) came to them and said we want to work one of our properties in to your game, lets get a deal made.  Hagewood added, “It didn’t really sink in until they told me they had to get Steven Spielberg’s approval.”  and when it comes to additions to an already existing great game the hits just keep on coming for Psyonix. Since adding the Delorian, Psyonix has done a deal with Bethesda to add the Vault Boy from Fallout 4 to the game, and more recently it added a pile of holiday goodies through an update that includes antlers, Christmas trees, and Snow Day, an unranked three-on-three play style that trades the giant soccer ball for a giant hockey puck.

No doubt there are many more planned additions to this already amazing game, and I personally cant wait to see what Psyonix has up their sleeve.

Rocket league to get mutators with free DLC

Posted on October 29, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Our oppinions here at brokenjoysticks on Rocket League are well known, our review posted here was glowing to say the least. So any time we hear about DLC or new content for that game we get EXTREMELY excited. So what could make an already amazing game where you shoot around in cars that have rockets even more amazing? The answer lies in Mutators

[youtube id=”cEH2hUw-d_U”]

Mutators at first seem simple, you can change all sorts of things, the size of the ball, the gravity in the field, the shape of the ball (is it still a ball if its square? I DONT KNOW) etc. Some that we know about already include: Cube (turns ball in to a cube), Moonball (lowers gravity), and Time warp (presumably warps time?) The new modifiers will appear in custom games and in a rotating playlist called unsurprisingly Mutator Mashup. I personally cant wait to get my hands on these game modes, the basic mode of rocket league was always where I had the most fun, and this will add so much more. Plus its bound to make it easier right? no i guess probably not, but thats the fun isint it?

Also announced is a hockey mode for later on in December. The Mutator DLC is free and will be available in the coming weeks. An additional preview will be provided today via a live stream.

Celebrate Back To The Future Day With Rocket League And The Iconic DeLorian on October 21st

Posted on October 13, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

As every Back to the Future fan knows, this year on October 21st, 2015 Marty McFly arrives in the future from 1985. To celebrate this momentous occasion developer Psyonix is releasing a special DeLorian themed car pack for Rocket League. I’m willing to bet that most of you have already guessed whats in the pack, but if you havent ill let you take a look at the image below to confirm what most of us already know. (its a DeLorian)

[youtube id=”MWTGyIwgvZw”]

A statement from developer Psyonix on the PlayStation blog said  “Truth be told, we used to fantasize and joke about having the DeLorean Time Machine in our game months before it even came out. We were all such huge Back to the Future fans here at Psyonix, that it was one of the few ‘Holy Grails’ we had hoped for besides having a hit game. The fact that we’re getting both of those ‘best-case scenarios’ in the same year is an amazing accomplishment for us, they’re things we’ll never forget!”

The post goes on to say “Hopefully you’ll never forget your time with the DeLorean Time Machine either, as we’ve worked meticulously to recreate its look, feel, and folding jet-wheels just as they appeared in the original motion picture trilogy. Best of all, it’s a heck of a lot of fun to play with—and comes complete with its signature ‘Burnt Rubber’ Rocket Trail to boot!”

I love to see this kind of DLC its purely cosmetic, and it really plays to a fan base and if you like Back to the Future, you can buy this car, and if you don’t, then your game play experience is not lessened. The DeLorian DLC pack will be released for both PC and PlayStation for the LOW LOW cost of $2. I personally cant wait to drive around and leave a few flame trails!
