Reminder: Nintendo DSi Shop service changed September 30th

Posted on October 6, 2016 by Jason Nason

Psst. Don’t forget about those Nintendo DSi points if you still have any.

Nintendo issued another reminder about the closure the Nintendo DSi Shop in 2017. The digital game service was the predecessor to the Nintendo eShop and has been available on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems since 2009.

If you still use and enjoy your Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL and plan to pick up any new digital content, your time is a running out. The ability to add Nintendo DSi Points to your account with a credit card or Nintendo DSi Points Card ended on September 30th, 2016 at 8:00 PM ET.

You’ll still have until March 31st, 2017 to redeem those points to purchase content in the Nintendo DSi Shop. The ability to re-download Nintendo DSiWare games will stop at some point, but details on just when that will happen aren’t clear at the moment.

Also Nintendo DSiWare will continue to be sold in Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Nintendo to Discontinue DSi Shop in 2017

Posted on April 3, 2016 by Jason Nason

This is your one year warning. Nintendo recently announced hat in they plan to close the Nintendo DSi Shop in 2017. The digital game service was the predecessor to the eShop and has been available on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems since 2009.

If you have Nintendo DSi Points to spend or you have deleted downloaded Nintendo DSiWare software from your system, you may want to make plans to get those titles in order. Games previously downloaded can be redownloaded until March 31st, 2017 but after that will be unavailable. If you still have an old Nintendo DSi kicking around you can also transfer those games to your Nintendo 3DS, though any downloaded DSiWare titles can still be played long after the closure of the DSi Shop.

For the time being you can still add Nintendo DSi Points to your account. This can be done up until September 30th, 2016. Content can be purchased in the Nintendo DSi Shop until March 31st, 2017. The ability to re-download Nintendo DSiWare games will stop at some point, but details on just when that will happen aren’t clear at the moment. Also Nintendo DSiWare will continue to be sold in Nintendo 3DS eShop

Crazy Train | Review

Posted on February 4, 2016 by Jason Nason

I must say that I really appreciate developers who are still supporting DSiWare. Sure the Nintendo DSi is considered an old system now, what with the 3DS/3DS XL and New3DS on the market, plus the eventual release of the mysterious NX, but there are millions of people who own a DSi. Nearly 40 million DSi/DSiXL units were sold worldwide though the systems lifespan, so there is clearly a base of users there.

Crazy Train is the latest DSiWare title to hit the DSi Shop. And of course any DSiWare title can also be picked up in the 3DS eShop as well.

Crazy Train is an easy to learn and hard to master puzzle game that’s a highly addictive. In the game you’ll take the role of, well you, as you pitch in to help hopeless train director Lionel Steeltrack. He’s always loved trains but has lost his nerve and needs your help sending passenger and cargo trains to their correct stations! You’ll need to make sure that they not only make it to the proper station, but also don’t collide with one another. That would be bad.

Nintendo Patent Infringement Case Dismissed

Posted on May 20, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo announced on Monday that the company has won a patent infringement case in a U.S. District Court in Texas. The case was brought in February 2009 by Wall Wireless, LLC, which claimed that the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems infringed a patent. Wall Wireless is a company whose primary business is enforcing patents. The court dismissed the case on May 19th, 2014, after the United States Patent and Trademark Office canceled all the patent claims Wall Wireless was relying on in its case.

This dismissal follows a decision by the Japanese Patent Office, which also found that Nintendo’s products do not infringe Wall’s Japanese patents.

“We are very pleased to see the U.S. case dismissed, and also to have the Japanese Patent Office confirm that Nintendo does not infringe Wall’s Japanese patents,” said Richard Medway, Nintendo of America’s vice president and deputy general counsel. “Nintendo vigorously defends patent lawsuits and other proceedings when we believe we have not infringed another party’s patents. It does not matter where such cases are filed or if it takes more than five years to vindicate our position. Nintendo continues to develop unique and innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others.”

Sea Battle | Review

Posted on April 27, 2014 by Jason Nason

Teyon’s newest game is for the good old Nintendo DSi and the DSiWare service, something that has all but been abandoned by most developers. And with some of the games being released in the eShop looking like they could have easily been DSiWare titles, including lacking 3D support, that is a shame.

But Teyon’s Sea Battle, while solid in the gameplay, game mechanics and look, has a few quirks which drag it under.

If you’ve ever played the board game Battleship you’ll know exactly what to expect from this title. The game isn’t marketed that way though as the developers clearly don’t have the license to do so, but that is what you’re getting. So if you’ve ever played it you’ll have no trouble getting started, though there are a few neat additions to the game. More on that in a bit.
