Neptunia VIIR Is Going To Nep You All Up On PS4 / PS4 Pro Today

Posted on May 8, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Idea Factory International and Compile Heart revisit Neptunia’s first 8th generation adventure, 2016’s Hyperdiemnsion Neptunia VII, with an enhanced remake, Hyperdimension Neptunia VIIR on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. An enhanced remake of the 2016, VIIR features a brand new battle system that returns some of the staples introduced way back in Hyper Dimenson Neptunia MK II, as well as sporting a brand new VR enhanced extra mode.

Small VR inspired vignettes that take place in “the player’s room” have well.. you, the player, interact with various Neptunia characters in small scripted sequences that take place outside of the main narrative. Without getting way too meta, players can customize their room with different accessories and cosmetic items to try and win the favor of their series favorites.

In terms of the story Neptunia VIIR retells the same narrative as the 2016 release, so if you’d like a quite distilled version of that tale, I’d highly recommend my review of the 2016 original on the PlayStation 4.

As the game’s title implies, Neptunia VIIR also brings support for the PlayStation VR headset during the “player room” sections. IFI International provided me with a review code ahead of the game’s release and my full impressions of this enhanced remake sometime next week.

Until then here is a bullet point list of new features provided by IFI PR and the latest batch of screenshots.

If you can keep your eyes open long enough without following that creeping shadow in the corner of your vision, now is the best time to take a look at the playable characters featured in this dungeon crawling JRPG.

Enter The Waking Nightmare of ‘Mary Skelter’

Enter a city unlike any other – one where the deepest despairs of the human mind have become manifest since the appearance of the mysterious ‘jail‘. The jail’s mere presence has turned this cities inhabitants into unwilling prisoners ruled over by mysterious monstrosities known as “machens“.  Players will join a boy named Jack, a girl named Ruby and their friends as they explore the dungeons of the city prison with the aim of escaping the daily torture & pain they endure – restore their hopes, dreams as well as peace to the city they call home.

They’re The Life of the Party

Idea Factory International has provided us with the following character bios for 7 of the playable characters in Mary Skelter: Nightmares:

JACK
A timid, yet brave young boy who is the hero of the game. He was imprisoned in the Jail with Alice. With his MaryGun and his special blood, he’s able to control the Blood Maidens which makes him a vital member of the party.

ALICE
Jack’s childhood best friend who is also a prisoner of the Jail. She discovers she’s a Blood Maiden after meeting Red Riding Hood. She’s a straightforward girl with a calm demeanor but she loses her cool when Jack is in danger.

RED RIDING HOOD
A longtime prisoner of the Jail and Blood Maiden who rescues Jack and Alice. She teaches them all about the Blood Maidens and acts as like an older sister to her less experienced teammates.

THUMBELINA
The oldest of the three Blood Maiden sisters. She pushes Jack around and is so prideful that she can’t even compliment him.

SNOW WHITE
The second oldest of the three sisters. She has a gentle personality and is kind to Jack. Despite her best intentions, she ends up complicating things. She’s afraid of looking into mirrors.

SLEEPING BEAUTY
The youngest of the three sisters. She’s comforting to Jack when he feels down. She’s almost always sleepy, so she expresses most opinions with a simple nod or by shaking her head.
KAGUYA
A lazy Blood Maiden who spends most of her time in her room. She uses her special ride, Bamboo 1, to move around or to fight. It takes a while for her to open up to Jack.

See The Nightmare For Yourself

Free DLC For Valkyria Revolution & Dark Rose Valkyrie To Help You Beat The Heat

Posted on July 28, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

What’s the best way to beat the summer heat? Surprisingly we’ve had two major RPG releases this season – Dark Rose Valkyrie and Valkyria Revolution and both games have a whole trove of free downloadable content on the PlayStation Store. When the thermometer breaks one of the best ways to pass the hot days is to immerse oneself in an RPG.

Fans of Idea Factory International’s recent RPG produced by development staff known for the ‘Tales of’ franchise, Dark Rose Valkyrie, can nab extra missions, a couple of costumes for party members and crafting resources.

Available Free DLC (Dark Rose Valkyrie)

  • Founding Commemoration Set
  • Special Boot Camp Set (x 3)
  • Special Provisioning Set (x 3)
  • Amusement Variety Set
  • Dark Heart Pounding Set
  • Dengeki Exciting Set

Perhaps visiting SEGA’s re imagining of the Valkyria series is more your style when it comes to summer time RPGs. SEGA has provided Amleth & Co with quite a few resource packs and special missions available through the PlayStation Store to aid them on their quest to free their home from the influence of the Ruzi Empire.

Available Free DLC (Valkyria Revolution)

  • Special Issue: Spinning Squall+
  • Special Issue: Veteran Pouch+
  • Special Issue: Smash Blaze+
  • Special Issue: Ragnite Shards
  • Special Issue: Burn Field+
  • Scenario Pack: Princess & Valkyria (extra missions)
  • Scenario Pack: Maxim & Remembrance (extra missions)
  • Scenario Pack: The Circle of Five
  • Scenario Pack: Vanguard Bundle (extra missions)

There you have it – two collections of DLC to extend your summer RPG experience and all of it is available for free. Let us know in the comments if you found this reminder post useful and I’ll try to highlight other low cost or free game add-ons in the future.

I have both Valkyria Revolution and Dark Rose Valkyrie loaded onto my PlayStation 4 and I am planning to delve deeper into my opinions on both later this summer, having just finished both an Elder Scrolls Online expansion and Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood – I need a bit of an RPG break before launching into another 50 hour+ quest.

Idea Factory International has launched the Steam version of this past spring’s tongue in cheek alternate universe of the self aware Megatagmension: Neptunia + Blanc Vs Zombies.

This game is a much different take in a series that has a number of different iterations and canon entries. Neptunia Vs. ZombiesI is a real time action title that casts Blanc and Neptune as members of the film club of the prestigious GamesIndustri Academy, while filming a movie to try and raise money to save their school from closure the cast comes across real life horrors! This shift in genre and universe surprisingly doesn’t affect the character’s core personality traits or humorous delivery.

Blanc + Neptune Vs Zombies & Trillion God of Destruction Coming To Steam

Posted on August 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Idea Factory International’s two most recent PlayStation Vita releases, Megatagmension: Blanc + Neptune VS. Zombies and Trillion: God of Destruction receive a bump up to 1080p as they head to PC this Fall.

Blanc + Neptune Vs. Zombie is a spin-off game from the main Hyperdimension Neptunia series that sees regular protagonist Neptune partner with Blanc & Co to take on Zombies while trying to save GamesIndustrie academy from being closed down due to low attendance while also producing a film that also happens to include the undead. This mixture of the series’ signature humor, real-time battles and a high school twist on the existing Neptunia formula makes Blanc + Neptune Vs. Zombies one class that you will want to enroll in this semester.

Trillion God of Destruction’s setting takes place a thousand years after a mythical battle that took place among the heavens. In the present day. demons remained in the underworld but things were quite peaceful until the powerful demon god, the titular Trillion appeared with a thirst to conquer not only the underworld but the entire world.

Trillion

In this strategy RPG players will have to perform their best training montage while Trillion God of Destruction sleeps because they’re going to need to hone their strategic skills to eliminate his 1,000,000,000,000 HP! Along the way, players will be able to recruit six Overlord Candidates to lead the armies against Trillion. Should you lose in your quest against such a daunting foe, stats carry over through multiple playthrough thanks to Trillion‘s New Game+ mode.

Special bundles for both Blanc+Neptunia Vs Zombies and Trillion God of Destruction will be available at launch. As soon as we havbe more details about the launch date for these two games on Steam we will let you know.

Enroll For Summer Classes With Megatagmension Blanc + Neptune Vs Zombies This May!

Posted on April 14, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

PlayStation Vita owners are going to put away the books and pull out their favorite weaponry when they return for summer classes with the release of Megatagmension Blanc + Neptune Vs Zombies on May 10th!

NeptunePlusBlanc2

Megatagmension Blanc + Neptune Vs Zombies is yet another spin-off game for IFI’s most popular franchise – this time seeing our two heroines take on hordes of the undead while attending the alternate universe school of Gamicademi. Unlike other games in the franchise, which have taken either a Strategy RPG or psuedo turn based RPG approach, Vs Zombies  is a purely action title where players are able to rack up high combos using a mixture of character swaps and support characters. New characters like my personal favorite Uzume from Megadimension Neptunia will join Blanc + Neptune in this latest adventure.

We’ll have more as the start of class approaches – so print off your schedules and catch up on your combat basics because Megatagmension Black + Neptune Vs Zombies is available to pre-order at GAME, Amazon, EB Games and other retailers!

Megadimension Neptunia VII | Review

Posted on February 11, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Mega_Dimension1
The Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise has kept my interest for the past seven years thanks to creative writing, absolutely adorable characters, clever tongue-in-cheek lines and an intriguing battle system. With the latest adventure, Megadimension Neptunia V.II (that’s Vee two not “version 2”) the folks at Compile Heart have done an excellent job retaining what has made the series so great, while adding twists to the established formula with some new breakout characters as the icing on the Nep Nep cake.

Main characters (known as CPUs) in Megadimension Neptunia V.II represent consoles from the seventh generation (think Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii), just as they have for the entire series. This time around, the inhabitants of GameIndustri are preparing for the a time of change where the established nations of LeanBox, Planeptune, Lowee and Lastation transfer their belief to new CPUs. Returning characters like Noir and the ever peppy Neptune now must contend with the prospect of their shares (representing their land’s belief in them) shifting to the next generation of CPUs.

Narratively, the game’s story starts out quite interesting, especially when compared to games like Hyperdimension: Rebirth 1, whose story can quite awhile to kick into gear. What really helps Megadimension Neptunia V.II to stand out amongst the three main games in the series (their superior remakes) and multiple spin-offs is the use of three discrete “episodes” that all occur at different points in the series canon.  The first, Zero Dimension Neptunia Z, transports Neptune and Nepgear into a doomed dimension from console generations past. If you thought that Compile Heart’s take on the 7th generation ere awesome just wait until you see their take on SEGA’s scrappy grey box from the late 90s!  The second episode, Hyperdimension Game Neptune G returns us to the events in the “current” canon, focusing on the lives of the CPUs as a mysterious power causes ripples to appear in the bonds between all of them. It’s an interesting take to have all of the CPUs: Neptune, Noire, Blanc and Vert explore their private lives. The whole thing almost feels like anime episodes that give us small vignettes into the motivations of the main cast.  I’ll leave the third episode as a complete surprise because it ties everything together. I feel quite refreshed that Compile Heart would take some risks in how it weaves the narrative and the multi-episodic approach is certainly welcome after the linear narrative of previous titles.

Mega_Dimension2

Gameplay in Megadimension: Neptunia VII shifts between two different styles – Visual novel style cut scenes with highly detailed 2D art and 3D dungeon exploration segments.

True to the presentation of other Hyperdimension titles, the 2D artwork fade as characters shift from pose to pose, if you’re looking for fluid 2D animation, the visual novel sections of Megadimension probably won’t do it for you. Thankfully compile heart’s characters are expressive as ever during the story scenes. Truly one of the great things about this series is how the writing makes self-referential material combined with jokes from the generations of games past without feeling like Neptunia is breaking the fourth wall too frequently.  The English dub is also pretty great featuring the talent of Melissa Fahn reprising her on-going role of Neptune, Christine Marie Cabnos as NepGear, and Kate Higgins as Iffy, among other long time series voice talent. Interaction between light-hearted characters like Neptune and stern characters like Iffy really make this game for me. The voice talent and the writers have spent a lot of time with these characters and as they’ve matured and grown  it becomes easier to appreciate the different dynamics that compose the bonds between our ensemble cast.

Dungeon exploration sections allow players to put together teams of three characters to clear out pre-built dungeons filled with some returning enemies and several original baddies created specifically for the episodes of Megadimension Neptunia VII. The party of three is able to explore the dungeons with the “leader” being the only character on screen until you come in contact with an enemy. At that point the game shifts from a large dungeon map to a smaller battle arena. Typically during my play through I’d want to bring 2 damage dealers and at least one character that has support abilities to ensure that my party stood a chance, although this is probably sound advice for any dungeon exploration RPG.  Once you’ve got your basic item usage, magical abilities and statistical management abilities down the combo system used in combat becomes a worthwhile investment.  Each character has three different ability types – the multi-strike Rush abilities,  the hard hitting Power abilities and Standard attacks. Managing to use the correct combinations at the right time can mean the difference between a successful dungeon run and having to start your progress all over again.

Neptunia

Megadimension Neptunia VII deserves praise for its willingness to take risks with the established series formula when it comes to narrative. The gimmick of interweaving episodes allows us to see the same events from not only several different perspectives but different periods in Gameindustri’s history. Mechanically Megadimension does not really introduce anything that could be considered groundbreaking for the series – instead, it brings enhances from Victory and the Rebirth remakes to the PlayStation 4.  Experiencing the visual novel style story bits were probably the most enjoyable part of the whole experience. It can be frustrating to grind out dungeons for some of the best loot, and losing your progress after a 40-minute dungeon run can be discouraging, but for series veterans like myself this shouldn’t deter the Nep Nep faithful. If you’ve wanted more of the absolutely awesome Compile Heart light-hearted comedy with one of the best new characters introduced to the series in some time then Megadimension Neptunia VII is the game for you!

Idea Factory International Announces Release Date For Trillion: God of Destruction

Posted on February 10, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Do you have what it takes to best a boss with one trillion hit points? That’s the question that Idea Factory International’s upcoming PS Vita exclusive strategy RPG Trillion: God of Destruction. IFI has announced that the game will be available both physical and digitally on March 29th in North America and April 1st in Europe.

In the world of Trillion: God of Destruction peace in the world of demons, the Underworld, lasted over a thousand years until the demon god of destruction, Trillion, appeared with intentions to consume the entire world.  Players will have six overlord candidates at their disposal to take down Trillion and possibly through forming strong bonds this goal can be achieved.

Alongside the announcement of the release date for Trillion: God of Destruction IFI also released several screenshots an official description of one of the characters in the game Levia:

Levia holds the Crest of Envy and is Zeabolos’ childhood friend. Fiercely loyal to Zeabolos (almost to the point of obsession), she chooses to fight for him to take vengeance against Trillion for harming her friend. When she’s around others, she respectfully refers to Zeabolos as “Great Overlord,” but when they’re alone she’s a lot more forward. However, she definitely lives up to the Crest of Envy when she sees Zeabolos talking with anyone else

Check out the brand new screenshots after the jump. We’ll have more about Trillion: God of Destruction closer to its release date.

Broken Deals: A Bunch of Idea Factory International Games Are On Sale!

Posted on November 29, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Idea Factory International’s titles like the Hyperdimension Neptunia series as well as the various Visual Novel and Japanese roleplaying games that they tend to localize for the west.

We’ve covered some of these games extensively and now Retroism has the all three Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth (remake) titles on sale for a ridiculously low price for the next 24 hrs.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 1:

Base game for $5.99 USD
Rebirth 1 DLC Pack for $1.18 USD

Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 2:

Base game for $5.99 USD
Rebirth 2 DLC Pack for $0.99

Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 3:

Base game for $11.99 USD

Broken Deals is a regular series of posts where Broken Joysticks editors feature deals from around the web for our readers. This post was in no way sponsored by the game’s developer, the site selling the software or the game’s publisher.
