Here’s Most of The Canadian Boxing Day Gaming Deals

Posted on December 26, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

With Christmas Day now past us I’m sure some of our readers are collecting their holiday cash and gift cards and getting ready to head down to the favorite retailer to purchase some new games. Perhaps you’re staying in-doors and doing a little shopping online instead? Regardless – Broken Joysticks has a rundown of all of the major deals from 3 major Canadian brick & mortar retailers and thankfully, yes, all of the ones listed in this article are also available online.

To be honest there aren’t a lot rush out and bust down the door deals this year. If you are in the market for an Xbox One Console then the 1TB Boxing Week Bundle is definitely worth it. You not only get two brand new games from this year – Rise of the Tomb Raider & Ori and the Blind Forrest but also Rare Replay which includes 30 classics. If you haven’t played Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Batman: Arkham Knight, The Witcher III or Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain all of these major 2015 releases are heavily discounted at multiple retailers.

Here’s a partial list comprising some of the deals I found interesting. There are lots more at the respective links!

Halo 5: Live Phaeton VTL Trailer

Posted on October 23, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Microsoft has released a very brief teaser trailer for their upcoming Halo 5: LIVE YouTube event. The Phaeton VTL trailer is done in the style of a smoothly edited car advertisement – with the announcer proclaiming that the Phaeton “flies and s**t”, honestly it’s pretty funny.

Halo 5: LIVE is a six hour long YouTube event leading up to the midnight general release of Halo 5: Guardians. Microsoft is promising a roundtable discussion between the writers of Halo 5 and actor Nathan Fillion (who voices Buck in Guardians and Halo 3: ODST). They’ll also be showing the world premiere of the Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series during the event. Fans from all around the world will also be getting involved – from locations such as New York City, London England and Sydney Australia.

Make sure to check out the Phaeton VTL trailer below and you can get the full Halo 5: LIVE schedule over on the Xbox Official Website.

Beware of Spoilers: Halo 5 Retail Copies May Be In The Wild

Posted on October 11, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Spartans be on alert because it seems like retail copies of Halo 5: Guardians may have found their way into the wild from the retail supply chain ahead of the game’s October 25th release date.

Akai, a member of the NeoGaf forum, posted an image taken from IMGUR that shows what looks to be a shrink-wrapped copy of Halo 5: Guardians for the Xbox One. Unfortunately no pictures of the disc or included leaflets were posted so its authenticity is subject for now.

It is not uncommon for the games media to receive copies of games well in advance, often these copies are retail builds or in some cases with larger games very controlled digital downloads if it’s a larger title under NDA. It is unknown if the copy shown in Akai’s images are simply pictures of a retail copy provided for review as no receipt was provided with the pictures.

This isn’t the first time a Halo title has been leaked ahead of release. Pretty much every major game in the franchise has been leaked since Halo 2. According to IGN’s extensive piece on the history of Halo leaks Halo 2 was leaked nearly 3 weeks before its release. Halo 3 faired a little better by only being leaked onto pirate sites a week before release. Halo: Reach leaked almost a full month before release and 343 Industries first Halo title – Halo 4 – leaked in mid-October of 2012.

If you’re planning on surfing the Halo sub-reddit, Twitch.tv or other popular Spartan gathering places beware because spoilers may be coming soon.

The Hunt Begins In The Latest Live Action Halo 5 Trailer

Posted on October 5, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Microsoft and 343 Industries have released a brand new 90 second live-action trailer for the upcoming Xbox One exclusive Halo 5: Guardians. In this trailer a commanding voice (presumably a high ranking UNSC officer) explains to Spartan Locke that the officially Masterchief (Spartan 117) is official listed as Killed In Action but unofficially has stopped responding to orders and is now considered an enemy of the UNSC.

Core to the single player experience of Halo 5: Guardians is rivalry between Master Chief’s Blue Squad and Spartan Locke’s Team of Fireteam Osiris. The theme of team rivalry carries over into the multiplayer side of things with the inclusion of Warzone a brand new team competitive mode that tasks two teams to destroy the “core” of the other team’s base. Standing in their way are waves of enemy AIs and large bosses. The whole thing sounds like a cross between the popular MOBA formula and horde mode and I can’t wait to try it!

Has John-117 gone rogue?

Halo 5: Guardians will be released on October 27th in North America.

Halo 5 Guardians Multiplayer Beta Details

Posted on November 17, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Master Chief makes his first appearance on Xbox One with this past week’s release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and with it came new details on the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians beta. If you happen to own either a digital or physical copy of Halo: TMCC you’re automatically eligible to test an early version of Halo 5’s Arena multiplayer from Dec 29th until January 18th 2015. We not only got the first details about gameplay changes coming in Halo 5 but the first gameplay videos as well!

Continuing some of the changes found in Halo 4’s single player Spartans now have access to a series of thruster packs that are built into their armor. This additional maneuverability allows players to quickly sidestep and pull off split second movements that they otherwise couldn’t do in previous Halo titles. Spartans are now also able to perform a ground pound attack after using the jet-pack ability. If all of this sounds like the “armor abilities” found in Halo: Reach,  that is because they function similarly but everyone will have access to all of them instead of choosing a pre-determined load out.  Another change to the game play formula is the addition of a new zooming mechanic that kind of works like Call of Duty’s iron sights, 343 industries is calling this feature “smart scope”.

So far we know the names of four maps that will be included in the beta: Truth (a re-make of Halo 2’s Midship),  Empire, Break out and Crossfire. In terms of weapons we know that classics like the Sniper Rifle, Pistol and Assault Rifle will return!

Check out several videos of beta gameplay in the embedded player below. Halo 5: Guardians is expected to be released in the Fall of 2015 and with the beta taking place almost a year before launch perhaps we’ll get a second chance to try Halo 5 before it launches!
