Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze being re-released for Switch

Nintendo announced on their surprise Nintendo Direct mini today that thay are re-releasing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Nintendo Switch. The original game was released on the Nintendo Wii U in February 2014.

This title includes all the fun and challenge of the original game, plus a new beginner-friendly mode that lets players enjoy this critically acclaimed adventure as groovy surfing simian Funky Kong. Funky Kong can double jump, hover, perform infinite rolls and even perform infinite underwater corkscrews. Thanks to his sturdy surfboard, even spikes can’t slow him down.

The game launches for Nintendo Switch on May 4th.

More Details for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Not too long ago Nintendo announced that Cranky Kong would join Diddy and Dixie as playable companion characters for Donkey Kong in the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Many seemed to be somewhat underwhelmed when that was the only news that Nintendo let slip at the VGX Awards, but when is the news of a new playable character not great news for an established franchise? Potential new characters for Super Smash Bros. are always top of mind for many people so this news was good news.

Cranky Kong has been around as a background character since the beginning and now that he is getting into the fray he brings with his own set of special moves that allow him to bounce off enemies and obstacles using his cane. Not only that but a new feature in the game allows players, who collect 100 bananas in a stage, to execute a new move called the KONG-Pow, which turns all enemies on the screen into items.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Set for Feb 21st Release

Nintendo confirmed the release date of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze at Saturday’s VGX event while also confirming a new playable character. The game is set to be released for the Wii U on February 21st with Cranky Kong the newest playable character.

The hosts of the awards show tried to pry for more information out of Nintendo at the event, including the ask if another Metroid game was in the works, but no other information was revealed. Take a look below at more details.
