Frost Giant Studios Stormgate Gets Brand New Trailer

Posted on December 7, 2023 by Rae Michelle Richards

Imagine for a moment – Hordes of burning infernal demon-like creatures surround armoured marines and walking mechanized tank as they fight the nigh endless number of enemy forces that look like they’ve come straight from the depths of hell.

What I’m describing isn’t the latest science fiction blockbuster or a classic 80s action movie like Aliens – but a situation you might just encounter in Frost Giant Game’s upcoming Real Time Strategy title, Stormgate. It might seem like the RTS genre has been on life support for the last decade or so but 2024 just might be the year that changes.

Created by former members of the development teams behind Warcraft 3, Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne and StarCraft 2 – Collectively some of Stormgate’s development team have helped craft longstanding titles that helped define the genre. Chris Metzen, the high profile game designer known for his work on DIablo, the Warcraft Franchise, lead designer of the original Starcraft consulted with Frost Giant Games during the early conceptual phases of development.

The leader of the Infernal Host faction is revealed towards the end of The Game Awards trailer so make sure to look out for that. Played by actor Simu Liu (2023’s Barbie, 2021’s Shang-Chi: Legend of the Seven Rings), the character – who is named Warz and will be a playable hero during the event of Stormgate’s campaign mode.

It’s not just a pedigree for developing genre defining titles that makes Stormgate so interesting but also the engine technology that Frost Giant Games have developed. Based upon Unreal Engine Technology, the Snowplay Engine supports impressive features like a max player count of 32 people, the ability for mass spectating, the inclusion of rollback netcode and so much more. It is quite clear from the technical overview in their 10 minutes Kickstarter video that Snowplay might just be what defines the capabilities expected from future RTS engines.

If you want to join the Human Vanguard or Infernal Host in 1 Vs. 1 online battles or help test out the really hype looking 3 vs. 1 co-op mode – the online multiplayer beta started on December 5th and access can be secured by backing their Kickstarter. Frost Giant Studios set a goal of $135,519 CDN dollars and right now their fund-raising effort is sitting at mind boggling 1.5 MILLION CDN as of press time. Frost Giant have managed to raise over 10x their original goal in only a couple of days.

Pledges start at $1 CDN but if you want access to the game (and who wouldn’t if you’ve read this far?) – the Founder’s Pack (priced at $25 USD) includes access to the game during a preview week expected to launch next summer, a hero unit for the vanguard faction, Army cosmetics and a Founder discord role. Those looking for immediate access to the game will have to shell out a bit more for the Deluxe Founder’s Pack (priced at $40 USD) which includes everything already mentioned plus a hero unit for the Infernal Host, a Chicken Pet and access to the first wave of Stormgate’s Beta.

Entry into the closed beta isn’t the only way to get a sneak peak at Stromgate before it enters Early Access next year. The high profile annual gaming tournament Dreamhack Atlanta will be hosting the first ever show matches with the under development RTS. The developers have also let some higher profile RTS content creators stream gameplay of the closed beta on both Youtube and Twitch.

We will have more coverage of Stormgate as development continues ahead of the 2024 launch into Early Access.

Real Time Strategy and FPS Collide In Eximus: Seize The Frontlines

Posted on February 22, 2021 by Rae Michelle Richards

The overlap between FPS fans and Real Time Strategy addicts must be larger than I expected given that Eximus: Seize The Frontlines is the second game I’ve seen in recent months try to blend the close quarters action of FPS games with the macro-view of strategy titles. Is this actually a new fusion genre none had told me about before?

Eximus: Seize The Frontlines is an online focused FPS/RTS hybrid that has one player fulfil the role of “commander” – building structures, managing resources and supporting troops while a platoon of up to 5 other players handle the battle on the ground using high tech mech suits. Unlike other games that adapt a 4 vs. 1 multiplayer scenario (see Dead by Daylight) Eximus is more like 1 + a squad of 5 working together to accomplish objectives. It all certainly sounds like an enticing premise.

The game was previously in Steam Early Access but was pulled from the store last fall while the developers worked on completing the game. All that work must be coming together because it was announced today that Eximus will ship version 1.0 as a fully released game on March 16th 2021.

I haven’t had the chance to play this game yet, as I honestly just found out it existed today and the game is currently not available for purchase. However, if the action presented in these official GIFs and trailer match the moment to moment experience – this could be a sleeper hit for sure, especially since the RTS scene doesn’t see much new action nowadays.

Ubisoft’s For Honor Is Free To Keep On Steam This Weekend

Posted on August 22, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Did you miss out on Ubisoft’s multiplayer only fighting game For Honor when it released back in 2017? Forget to claim (or not want to claim) the game for free when it was given out on U-Play during E3? Now is your second chance to knab a gratis copy of For Honor: Starter Edition on Steam this weekend. All you have to do is navigate on over to the game’s Steam Page and click play to permanently add it to your library.

For Honor pits three different factions of warriors (Samurai, Knights and Vikings) against each other in a series of multiplayer focused battles. Combat in For Honor is a bit different than other action titles, each of the factions have 3 unique stances (Left, Right and Raised) which can be used to parry or overpower an enemies attacks – think of it like Rock, Paper, Scissors. In addition to the six existing multiplayer modes which support 3 different configurations – 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 – For Honor (all editions) provides a co-op capable single player campaign that will teach you the ropes before jumping into the multiplayer modes.

There are a few differences between For Honor: Standard Edition and For Honor: Starter Edition, which is being given out for free – the number of heroes unlocked from the start. Standard and Deluxe players are able to use all 18 heroes right away but Starter Players are limited to 3 “Vanguard Heroes” and 3 additional heroes tied to the individual faction that you chose. The remaining 12 heroes not unlocked will have to be earned using an in-game currency called “steel”, apparently can be slow to accumulate, or purchased with individual micro-transactions.

Currently available concurrent player count numbers (from SteamSpy) put the average on Valve’s platform at a healthy 5,800+ in the last 30 days. This doesn’t include players using U-Play to take advantage of the E3 For Honor giveaway, however. It should also be noted that For Honor is also included in this month’s Xbox Games With Gold and is available on that platfrom until the end of August.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night E3 Backer Demo Now Available On Steam

Posted on June 29, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Backers awaiting a taste of the upcoming Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night no longer have to wait as the E3 build has found its way onto Steam for those that pledged more than $60 USD during the game’s $5,500.000 USD KickStarter from March 2015.

Scenario Planner and famous game producer Koji Igarashi posted an update on the game’s campaign page outlining the content that backers will find within this beta demo. Featuring 5 unique characters – Miriam, a girl with a body embedded with crystals, the alchemist Johannes, A swordsman by the name of Gebel, An exorcist who has been sent by the church to deal with demons, Zangetsu, a samurai who will bring his blade against the hordes and Alfred, an alchemist who has a past with domonic power. It seems there is a lot on offer here, even if it took a few extra weeks for developers to work out all of the issues.

Koji Igarashi’s statement included the following information:

“Every time I go to E3, I’m reminded that this is the biggest game show in the world. I had a valuable opportunity to meet other developers who I usually don’t get to see.

This year, Bloodstained was exhibited in a closed space at 505 Games. The demo we showcased is actually the Beta Backer Demo that will be available today to all backers at the $60 tier and higher.

You will be able to experience a part of the storyline through these characters.

Regarding the gameplay—we’ve prepared a demo that I can proudly call an action game. Well, I guess that should be obvious… but hey! We also added special commands that were eagerly requested! It’s only a small portion of what’s in the game, but try to find them and see what you think. There are also new enemies and shards introduced in this demo.

In addition to the combat, there is a shop to buy and sell items, and an alchemy room to craft new items, where you can also make food and upgrade shards.”

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will be released later this year for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. It is being published by 505 Games.

Monster Prom (PC) | Review

Posted on June 19, 2018 by Meghan Kass

Ah, prom; its a time for excitement, a time for bonding with your fellow classmates and a time for anxiety. This can be especially true if you happen to be a monster! What is a monster to do about finding a date for the big event? Well, that is where you, the player, come in. Monster Prom, brought to you by Those Awesome Guys and Beautiful Glitch, puts you, and if desired, your friends in the position of a young monster looking for their last minute date for prom! Can you whoo the monster of your dreams? or will your future be bleak and horrific? Which one of your friends can be successful at finding love?

As stated above, Monster Prom is both a single player dating sim and a multiplayer competitive dating sim. How did Beautiful Glitch make a dating sim competitive you may ask? Well that is one of the things that make this game one of a kind. First, let’s go over the general gameplay

There are three times you perform actions in the game per day. In the morning you choose a class to attend (or maybe you choose to party or skip class if you’re really a rebel); at noon you decide where to sit at lunch and in the evening once again you choose a class or to goof off. Depending on the classes you pick in the morning and evening, you can raise one of your character’s stats. You can also choose to go to the shop and buy an item to help increase a stat. These stats include Smarts, Charm, Money, Fun, Boldness and Creativity. These will help you be desirable to one of the games wonderful bachelors or bachelorettes. Some events will also help you bond with certain monsters, but if you make the wrong choices interacting with them, it could drive them away from you.  Over the course of a number of weeks, depending on if you want to play the short or long version of the game, you must increase the right stats and make the right choices to get your dream date.

Multiplayer comes into play by allowing opposing players to affect certain players standings with certain monsters. You can also block opposing players from going to classes that you see will raise a stat they are trying to raise. You also have a chance to steal first player by playing a short debate game where you are asked to name something like an object, movie or even brand and then are asked a question such as “which object would be the strangest to use as a sex toy?” and the winner of the debate would take first player. If no conclusion can be reached, you can also click the “random” button to randomly select a first player.

After some time of going back and forth, you then each decide who to ask on a date. The winner is the one who successfully gets the date or its a tie if both or neither do.

So, the most important part of any dating sim are the eligible dates. So, how are the options? Well, its best if you don’t take these characters too seriously. The dates are played in a very tongue and cheek manner. You have Liam, the hipster vampire for instance, who is a very hyperbolic example of the hipster trope and only cares about irony, art and food photography. You also have Polly, the ghost who is the “afterlife” of the party and does copious amounts of drugs and only wants to have fun. Miranda is a Princess with a slightly sadistic streak to her when it concerns her enemies and commoners who is a clear play on Disney princesses. There is the werewolf Scott who is a real puppy of a sweetheart and the dumb athlete stereotype which was meant to be a joke on the movie Teen Wolf. You can chose Damien LeVay, the touch anti authority demon who pulls no punches and always ready to fight. Vera is the eligible gorgon who is all about good business and money.

None of these characters is particularly more than their tropes. This game is very light hearted and silly and really, I suggest playing through all the characters just to enjoy all the writing and humor. I did not feel connected strongly to any of the characters, but the banter and situations kept me interested. I actually found myself more interested in the outcast characters (the ones who you can not chose to date until you meet certain conditions) like the witch coven, the shopkeeper or the slayer than my first potential dates.

Overall, Monster Prom is a very fun time with cute art, fun gameplay, amusing writing and just over all a silly short game to enjoy by yourself or with friends. If you’re looking for something different, pick this up and enjoy the monster mash.

Wizard of Legend (Nintendo Switch) | Review

Posted on June 8, 2018 by Meghan Kass

When I first saw images of Wizard of Legend, I will be completely honest and say I rolled my eyes and groaned a bit. To me it seemed like yet another indie game using pixel art to try and cash in on nostalgic value and save some money by using a less involved art direction. I couldn’t see how the developer and publisher, Contingent99 could sell me on this game at all. I’ve played dungeon crawlers, I’ve played “8 bit” pixel style games and overall I just had a “been there, done that” attitude about it all. After I watched the trailer though, my feelings began to change and I became more excited to play it. I can say, playing it definitely was not the experience I first expected.

To say this game is some groundbreaking experience that completely changes the genre would be a bit hyperbolic. This game is very enjoyable, though. This game became so enjoyable for me, I even took my switch with my to my work and played it through my break while playing coffee.

This game is a great one to get on the Switch for the portability and the option to put it on a bigger screen if you want to play with a friend. The main idea of the game is simple; are a wizard going through a gauntlet to prove yourself.

You will first need to get yourself some equipment and weapons and spells from the main market  or you will be pummeled almost immediately. As soon as you feel sufficiently prepared for the dungeons, you transport yourself down and begin your challenge.

The dungeons are proceduraly generated along with its enemies.  What’s interesting about this particular game is the bosses you need to face are also procedurally generated and the environment is as well. If you are going to face the ice boss for instance, the floors you go through in the dungeon will also be ice themed. Every time you die, everything refreshes, but you keep your money earned which means you can make upgrades.

Be prepared to die a lot, because you will. These dungeons are difficult, especially if you are flying solo. This game goes much smoother if you are playing with a friend. It took me many deaths and collecting coins to get the right gear to get through dungeons. I will give the game credit though, it doesn’t feel like a slog. Yes, it can be frustrating when you are almost through and then die at the last stretch of a dungeon, but the levels generally go quickly so you it won’t take long to get back to where you were and if you upgraded, it might go even quicker, some of my favorite upgrades was the relic antiquated tabi which gave you a chance to evade and the Arcana Mentis Imperium which charms enemies into fighting each other. This game will give you a lot to collect and try out and play with. The controls on the Switch are smooth and easy to pick up.

The pixel art is standard and pleasing enough. The colors are very vibrant, which is what stood out to me the most, but other than that its all pretty standard design. That doesn’t mean its bad, it just means its fine.

Overall, this is an enjoyable game for someone craving a dungeon crawler that is good on the go or with a friend. I recommend this for the Switch over Steam personally for the portability alone, unless you only have friends with PCs you want to play with, in that case, choose Steam. Try it out and enjoy some good old fashioned dungeoneering.

Sleep Tight coming to Switch/Steam in July

Posted on May 22, 2018 by Jason Nason

Sleep Tight, the arcade-style twin-stick shooter with base-building elements, is planned for release on July 26th for Nintendo Switch and PC.

The game is created by a veteran team of Hollywood film artists and AAA game developers, including VFX artist Maxx Burman (Far Cry 5Iron Man 3Game of Thrones) Disney illustrator Dylan Ekren (Wreck It RalphZootopia), and Ubisoft designer Oscar Mar (Far Cry 3Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: ConvictionRainbow Six Siege).

In Sleep Tight, players choose between a cast of 12 kids whose bedrooms are assaulted every night by hordes of monsters pouring out from the dark corners of their homes. Using an array of toy weapons ranging from dart guns to water balloons, players hold the frightening creatures at bay until sunrise. Then they can cash in their piggy banks to build elaborate pillow forts, construct turrets, and buy various other upgrades that will better help them survive increasingly difficult evenings to come.

Each of Sleep Tight’s dozen heroes comes with their own exclusive ability and playstyle. For example, the trigger-happy Tommy starts each match with 500 darts and gets discounts on Weapon Skills, while the comic book fan Dexter has superpowers that give him discounted power-ups, and Rosie uses her building skills to engineer turrets that deal more damage and extra strong pillow fort walls. Every child has their own specialty that keeps the game fresh no matter how many midnight monster hunts players go on.

Sleep Tight has been such a special project to work on,” said Maxx Burman, co-founder and creative director at We Are Fuzzy. “While our team has been lucky to work on so many amazing properties over the course of our careers, it’s been amazing to create such a warm, pure, nostalgic experience, and we look forward to sharing it with everyone when we launch this July.”

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 4.3 Details Further Unveiled During Letter From The Producer Live

Posted on May 14, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

FFXIV’s next big update Patch 4.3: Under the Moonlight will be delivered to players on May 22nd it has been revealed during the latest entry in the Letter From The Producer Live live-streams. During the show with Producer / Director Naoki Yoshida, a special guest joined the show in the last half – none other than the creator of Italic himself – Yasumi Matsuno, to further discuss the second tier of the Return to Ivalice raid series.

The Main Scenario Continues
As with every major patch released for Final Fantasy XIV, the Main Scenario revolving around the player character and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn continues for yet another instalment full of twists and turns. Patch 4.3 will see the storyline regarding the far eastern land of Doma come to a dramatic conclusion as the newly installed leader of Doma, Hien, grapples with a tense prisoner exchange with the Gatlean Empire. Can we trust the Empire’s intentions at face value? For a faction that has invaded Eorzea and caused a devastating calamity five years ago, there isn’t much reason to trust them.

Job Adjustments
Several jobs will receive adjustments as part of Patch 4.3, it was noted that the Tank role of Dark Knight could be due for a complete redesign but we shouldn’t expect it during this patch series – as this redesign would take at least six months of development time. Dark Knight, Monk, Astrologian, Black Mage, Samurai and Scholar will all receive adjustments with this patch.

• Samurai – Potency increases, Basic combo potency to be increased, possibility of empty control (remove empty like Machinist / Bard?) to be included with these adjustments.
• Dark Knight – Potency increase across the board, animation cool downs to be reduced, defence buffs.
• Astrologian – Cast times for Attack Spells reduced across the board, Lightspeed MP cost of affected spell reduced from 50% to 25%, Danage reduction effect currently on this spell to be removed.
• Scholar – misc Pet adjustments.
• Monk – Skills that allow Monks to reduce the amount of Emity they generate will be introduced.
• Ninja – Unspecified adjustments for use with the Deep Dungeon Heaven on High.

New Deep Dungeon: Heaven on High

Remember the Jenga tower in the Ruby Sea that the camera focuses on for a long dramatic pause before never being mentioned again? Players were correct in their assertion that this will be the new Deep Dungeon – similar to Palace of the Dead – with a focus on quick experience gain and it’s own levelling system. Rather than contain 200 floors of challenging MOBS, Heaven on High will feature 100 floors with the really hard content beginning on floor 31. It was also mentioned that a “grand summing” system will become available in Heaven on High, but what this actually entails is currently unknown.

Forbidden Land of Eureka: Pagos (To be introduced several weeks later in Patch 4.36)

Our last expedition to the Forbidden Land of Eureka seems like it has been a success with the announcement of the commencement of the Pagos expedition expected to be released sometime in June. This snowy region of the misplaced island of Val could very well focus on the Blizzard aspected aether that players use to defeat some of the Notorious Monsters across Val. Once players locked down the pattern of knowing the NM spawn times, moving as a cohesive “train” from Monster to Monster and power-levelling. The obvious problem with this system was that lower level characters could contribute to the battle against the stronger NMs like Pazuzu. Here’s hoping the vague promise of ‘new gameplay elements’ can make our time in Pagos engaging and entertaining.

Final Fantasy XIV Under The Moonlight will be released next Tuesday, May 22nd. Alongside everything outlined above it also brings a brand new 24-person raise, a new Extreme Trial, a mysterious unannounced Story related trial (it’s Zenos.. come it has to be) and the Ultima Weapon’s Refrain (Ultimate) – the next segment of the ultra-hard content for the top % of players. For further coverage check out my post from last month.

Valve Welcomes Firewatch Developer Into City-17

Posted on April 24, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

*Clears throat and does best G-Man impression*

“Welcome Campo Santo. You have chosen or been chosen to relocate to one of the worlds’ largest digital distribution services. Valve thought so much of your talent they’ll probably relocate your headquarters to Washington state now that they are your benefactors. Whether you’re at Valve to stay or move on to parts unknown, welcome.”

Riffs on Dr.Breen’s Half Life 2 speech aside, yup it is true – Valve has purchased the developers behind last year’s critical success Firewatch. Members of the Valley of the Gods team will move to city 1… err Bellevue Washington as they join forces with the owners of Steam.

Their next game, Valley of the Gods is expected to be released sometime next year. In The Valley of The Gods is a first person narrative driven title set in Egypt during the 1920s. As protagonist Rashida players will have one last chance to live a life of adventure exploring tombs, ruins and other remnants of the long gone Ancient Egyptian society. Players won’t alone in their journey to aid Rashida in her quest, a non-playable partner character Zora will aid her during the story. In The Valley of The Gods also features a working 35mm camera in-game! It can be added to your Steam wishlist here.

The Campo Santo team summed up their discussions with Valve in regards to the recent purchase thusly on their blog announcing the move:

“We had a series of long conversations with the people at Valve and everyone shared the satisfaction we take in working with people whose talents dwarf our own to make things we never thought possible. Both sides spoke about our values and how, when you get right down to it, we, as human beings, are hard-limited by the time we have left when it comes to making the things we care about and believe in. They asked us if we’d all be interested in coming up to Bellevue and doing that there and we said yes.”

Path to Mnemosyne announced for Switch/PS4/Xbox One

Posted on April 23, 2018 by Jason Nason

DevilishGames and the publisher Hidden Trap announced today that have reached an agreement to bring Path to Mnemosyne to game consoles and they announce it with a new teaser.

Initially the game was born as an experimental project for PC, but after some positive reception, DevilishGames joined with Hidden Trap to bring Path to Mnemosyne to video game consoles.

According to a release, Path to Mnemosyne is a hypnotic adventure created with a infinite zoom in which the player must advance through a path full of imaginative puzzles to recover the lost memories of the protagonist. Path to Mnemosyne‘s mysterious story, minimalist narrative and disturbing graphics and sound sections ensure a bizarre and memorable experience for the player.

“We are really excited about the agreement we have reached with Hidden Trap to bring the game to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” said David Ferriz, co-founder of DevilishGames in the release. “We know that they will do a great job with the Path to Mnemosyne ports and will help us a lot to reach as many people as possible.”

The game is currently in its final development phase in its PC version and is scheduled for release in the second half of 2018. No word on when the console version will be released.
