INDIEGALA 10 Begins

Posted on October 22, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

The tenth IndieGala has started. As with previous iterations, you’ll get to pay what you want. Furthermore, you may choose how to divvy up your donation between the developers, Indie Gala, or Charities. This time the Charities are the Able Gamers foundation and the Italian Red Cross which is raising funds to help Emilia Romagna, a region of Italy that was recently hit by an Earthquake.

You may watch the trailer and read about the games after the jump.Read More

Hearts of Iron 3: Their Finest Hour Contest

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Monty, Broken Joysticks’ official wargaming bulldog, has just secured some copies of the latest HOI 3 expansion, Their Finest Hour, to giveaway to our readers. I understand that his meticulous planning allowed him to succeed in an amphibious landing near Stockholm where, after a visit to the Vasa, he liberated some Steam codes from Paradox Interactive.

We have 7 steam codes for Their Finest Hour and 5 steam codes for The Hearts of Iron 3 Collection (which includes the base game and expansions needed to play the game). Monty also scored two copies of Crusader Kings 2. This sounds like a good excuse for a contest.

One of the new features in their Finest Hour (or at least new to HOI3) is the ability for your commanders to gain traits through combat. In order to enter our contest tell us (in the comments) what trait you deserve and why. For instance you could claim the right to be a Ranger because you are really into Lord of the Rings cosplay. The winners will be announced on Monday. You may see a full list of the leader traits after the jump.Read More

Indie Gala Seven Begins

Posted on July 30, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Indie Gala has just launched its seventh “pay what you want” game bundle. If you purchase a copy of this bundle, you can choose how to split up your money between the developers, two charities, and Indie Gala. The charities you may donate to in this bundle are the Italian Red Cross (to help in efforts in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy that suffered from a series of earthquakes in May) and AbleGamers, which works to help make video games more accessible for disabled people.

They’ve got a couple of great games in this bundle (each of which will come with a Steam key). People who pay less than the average price (which is about $7.00) will receive Rig’n’Roll, Space Rangers, Reign: Conflict of Nations, and a mystery game. People who pay more that the average will also receive Death to Spies, Death to Spies: Moment of Truth, King’s Bounty: Armored Princess, UFO: Afterlight and another mystery game.

I personally think that King’s Bounty: Armored princess alone is worth over $7.00.

If any of this sounds interesting to you then check out the bundle here. It will be running for another 13 days, so you can afford to tarry a little bit.

Arma 2: Combined Operations Patch Released

Posted on July 24, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

After Day Z came out, Arma 2: Combined Operations has sold, and this is just a rough estimate, about a bazillion copies. In fact, it always seemed to be in the top 5 best sellers of the latest Steam summer sale even when it wasn’t heavily discounted. Now that so many more people are playing Arma2: Combined Operations, Bohemia Interactive has released a patch (version 1.62) for the title. The press release promises lots of “fixes to multiplayer, which- aside for the large scale military battles, will also make zombie hunts much less prone to crashes and should improve server stability.”

The main highlights of the patch are below, and you can read the whole change log after the jump.

  •     Multiplayer optimizations, security and server improvements
  •     Overall stability was improved with numerous tweaks and fixes
  •     Added new video options (Post-Process Anti-Aliasing, Alpha To Coverage)
  •     Additional AI improvements and numerous bug fixes
  •     Resolved issues with several training missions
  •     Added a lot of new script commands for content makers

Steam Summer Sale Deals for July 19th

Posted on July 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Well, yesterday’s plot didn’t work out so well, and the Steam Sale marches on. I’ve been thinking about ways to stop this ravager of wallets. Perhaps I’ll start a Kickstarter project to bring an end to these deals. The basic concept is that I will build some sort of giant magnet as well as a “mancannon.” We’ll suck out Valve employees with the magnet and shoot them into the Puget Sound with the mancannon, forcing Gabe Newell to end this madness. I’m estimating that this will cost several million dollars and can only hope that EA’s Senior Vice President of Global Ecommerce, David DeMartini, will donate a few million to help get this started.

That being said, you may see today’s deals below.Read More

Posted on July 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Registrations have begun for Quakecon 2012. As always the annual bring your own computer LAN party will be free to attend, though there are a few paid options, including a swag pack (featuring both an official QuakeCon 2012 and a Dishonored t-shirt). In addition to the LAN party, the event will feature the annual keynote address by John Carmack, opportunities to play both Dishonored and Doom 3: BFG edition. Additionally, there will be panels featuring people like Marty Stratton from id Software, Ted Price of Insomniac Games, and Chet Faliszek and Tom Leonard from Valve Software.

This year’s event, hosted at the Hilton Anatole hotel in Dallas, TX, will kick off on the morning of Thursday, August 2nd and last until noon on the 5th. We’ll let you know when we find out more details about the panels and panelists. In the meantime, you can register for the event here.

Rock Band Blitz Release Date Announced

Posted on July 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Harmonix has announced the release dates for Rock Band Blitz (or as we like to call it, because it uses a controller rather than instrument peripherals, Frequency 3/Amplitude 2). It arrives on the PlayStation Network on the 28th of August and will retail for $14.99. Blitz will roll onto Xbox Live Arcade on the next day and retail for 1200 Microsoft Points. Rock Band Blitz is apparently compatible with thousands of songs in the Rock Band Music store and all of Blitz’s songs will work with Rock Band 3, which is promising if you are a fan of the Rock Band franchise (and Amplitude). Read on for a trailer and a list of all tracks announced so far.Read More

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission Teaser Trailer Released

Posted on July 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Bohemia Interactive just released a nebulous teaser trailer for their upcoming real time strategy game/ vehicle simulator hybrid Carrier Command: Gaea Mission. As the name suggests, this is a remake of 1988’s Carrier Command. The basic gist of the game is that the players’ main base is an aircraft carrier used to launch assaults on various islands and, naturally, the enemy carrier. In addition to playing it like an RTS, you can assume direct control over any individual unit dispatched from your carrier.

You wouldn’t learn any of this from the teaser trailer below, so we’ve also added a link to the more informative demonstration from E3.

MechWarrior Online Community Day and Centurion Mech Announced

Posted on July 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Mechwarrior Online Developers Piranha Games have been very busy this week. First, they released a video showcasing the upcoming free-to-play game’s latest Mech, the Centurion. This medium sized Mech is sort of like the T-34 of Mechs, boasting a good mix of speed, armor, and firepower. You can watch the video with some pretty gameplay footage below.

[youtube id=”3m24i6iTeyc” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Additionally, Piranha games, Nvidia, and Infinite Game Publishing (the publisher of Mechwarrior online),  are hosting a MechWarrior Online Community Day in Santa Clara, California at 5 p.m. on July 27th. The event, an invitation only affair, will let the chosen few join the developers for drunken debauchery, beer, pizza, and some Mechwarrior Online lanning. There will be a tournament, prizes, and chances to play around with unrevealed Mechs as well as the newfangled Razer Blade laptop. Read on to see how you can score an invite to this event.

Steam Summer Sale Deals For July 18th

Posted on July 18, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

The Steam Summer Sale continues despite my best attempts at monkeywrenching. In fact, I used all the knowledge at my disposal. For instance, while cutting my cable company’s fiber optic lines, I made certain to cut a section of wire out and take it with me. That makes things harder for the technicians to fix. I also used a taser on my modem and router for good measure.

Then I discovered that this DIDN’T affect Steam in anyway. In fact it just messed things up for me. Oh boy, am I in a pickle now! On the plus side, I won’t have the money for anymore of these pesky sales!

That being said, you may read today’s deals below.Read More
