FAST RMX | REVIEW

Posted on March 20, 2017 by Les Major

There was something magical about going into an arcade in the 90s. Seeing the latest racing games all lined up with amazing graphics and blistering speed. It was just the sort of experience you couldn’t get at home on a console. As the years have gone on we’ve had games like that arrive in living rooms. FAST RMX has the visuals and the speed that really give you that rush of playing an arcade hit. It’s a futuristic joy ride with a few twists to keep things interesting.

You may not be familiar with the FAST series if you don’t poke around on the eShop much, but with FAST RMX being a launch title on the Switch, it definitely shines a spotlight on this gem. I personally hadn’t been aware of the series myself and my first experience was at a Nintendo Switch press event in January. Out of everything there it was one of my top games for the new system. Thankfully since then I’ve had the chance to try it out more and it really is a fantastic racing game!

First off, I was surprised this wasn’t a physical release. The Switch event left me so dazzled with FAST RMX’s beautiful graphics and a staggering 30 tracks, six of which are new since the previous Wii-U FAST title, I figured it must be an in store purchase. After contacting a few of our PR reps, and probably looking like a dork in the process, I learned it was surprisingly a download only eShop title. What’s more, it’s only $19.99 USD! Twenty bucks! Two racing modes, three cup circuits per mode, and ten championships cut up into three races each. Again, thirty tracks!

Even though FAST isn’t new, it’s gimmick fits in perfectly on the Switch. As you race around the track in an intense battle for first place, you can phase switch between two different colored afterburners, orange and blue. If you hit the same colored strips on the track, or even other things like beams pouring out of a hovering UFO, you get a speed boost. You can phase switch at the press of a button. Also along the track are colored orbs to collect. Those fill up your boost bar which lets you either tap for a short boost, or hold down the boost bumper to use a continuous flow of fuel.

The tracks are actually quite detailed and varied as well. So it’s not 30 tracks of similar content. In a way some of it feels like Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, which is a fantastic thing. One track has you careening through a glass tunnel under the ocean at one point, another has you hovering between track sections while asteroids crash about in space, even others feel like racing through Jurassic Park in a rainstorm, just without the dinosaurs. There are other hazards however, like spider robot things, energy beams, spinning fan blades, and more! It’s not all uniform either. Some tracks don’t even have barriers on some sides and you can speed right off into the desert off-road to crash among the rocky rubble. Others still are cylinders you race along throughout the track. The variety is fantastic and for the admission price it’s ridiculous what you’re getting here in a VERY good way.

If the different circuits still aren’t enough of a challenge for you, there’s hero mode! This vicious setting lets you take on any singular track you want with a few requirements. To begin with, you need to come in first. Secondly, your boost is also your machine’s shield bar. So if you drain all your boost, you’re toast. Unlike championship mode, once you fail, the race is over.

The soundtrack is awesome as well. Somewhere between electronica and almost dubstep at times I’d say is where it falls. Destructoid even noted that there were almost 50 music tracks to the game! All that and thankfully the game is under a gig! It’s just 900 MB. A great racing game and it isn’t going to clog up the memory on your Switch!

The only down side I found was that using seperate JoyCon’s isn’t really a suitable way to try and play an intense racing game like FAST RMX. It can be done, and to do their credit Shin’en did a good job with the control scheme. However the tiny size just doesn’t work for it. I can see playing platformers and the like on the JoyCons but if you’re going to play FAST RMX multiplayer, you’ll probably just want a second controller. We tried out local multiplayer splitscreen and it was enjoyable. Just not too comfortable with the seperated JoyCon controllers.

As with all Nintendo Switch titles, FAST RMX is wonderful in handheld mode. The Switch’s screen is bright and vibrant and you feel absorbed right into the racing action in your hands. I enjoyed it this way, but I prefer FAST RMX on the big screen so I can take in more of the beautiful visuals Shin’en has put into these awesome tracks! But being able to take FAST RMX with you on the go is an excellent plus.

Fans of over the top sci-fi racing should definitely pick up this title! I’d love to see Shin’en Multimedia expand these games further with even more play models or maybe even mirrored track modes. It really does deserve to be much bigger than what it is. On the bright side, being a Nintendo Switch launch title may be just the publicity FAST RMX needs to bring it up into the AAA category. I’m not exaggerating, this game is solid. Your first few races you may smack off the walls like crazy but as you learn to use the triggers to slide around turns smoother and get used to the placement of color phase boost strips. If you have a Nintendo Switch, you should be playing FAST RMX. I know I love it!

If You Love The Witcher, Read ‘Blood Of Elves’

Posted on March 16, 2017 by Les Major

Blood Of Elves Novel Cover

Blood of Elves (available from Hachette Book Group), the first full novel about Geralt of Rivia is a testament to how well written the games are. As backward as that statement sounds you need to remember that the novels came first. Written by Andrzej Sapkowski who began the tales in a submission to Polish sci-fi / fantasy magazine Fantastyka in the 1986. The submission was for a contest the magazine was running and Andrzej won third place! So while Europeans were first powering up the original Nintendo Entertainment System for the first time, an absolute legend in video game history was being born.

While I realize these novels are translations of the original Polish publications, there is no way to deny the tone that Andrzej clearly inspired in the games is here. Blood of Elves feels like you’re experiencing the third Witcher game specifically. The game itself is fantastic and should certainly be added to your collection if it’s not already. Wild Hunt, the third game in the series, conveys dialogue and story in a masterful way that really hasn’t been so perfect in video games before. Not only that but the combat and action flow beautifully, better than ever in the series. What is most interesting is how at home players will feel reading Blood of Elves.

The novel gets right to it, introducing you to many of the series characters within the first fifty pages. It also drops enough names to fill any seasoned player of Wild Hunt with enough familiarity to draw them right in. Again, it’s incredible to realize just how reversed these references are. This isn’t a novel doing a video game justice. It’s a talented writer bringing his world to life in a way that inspired one of video games greatest titles ever! We’ve all heard Doug Cockle’s excellent rendition of The Witcher’s gruff voice as he’s spoken the myriad of locations, names, and terms that series fans know and love. Having an understanding of those pronunciations makes the novel flow like butter when reading through conversations between the characters.

That doesn’t mean fantasy fans who aren’t into the games will be lost here. The book is well paced and eases readers into the world of The Witcher. References feel more like professional nods to various factions in other pop culture such as if you’d read a passing mention of the Empire in Star Wars without knowing who they are. It’s not a confusing jumble of terms and names, but instead a very well crafted acknowledgement of the world the characters live in making the novels worthwhile to read again for a deeper experience. Andrzej’s creation is well done and polished, even if this is a translation. It’s the spirit of the writing, the flow and overall storyboard that stand out. Much like the games, especially Wild Hunt, Blood of Elves comes across as a hidden gem that is clearly a blockbuster.

Much like The Witcher’s themselves, this series isn’t what it appears and within no time at all you can become familiar with it and see it for how amazing it truly is.

Soulless Wonder Title

Sister site Darkain Arts Gamers has released their very first game on Steam Greenlight and it’s a doozy! Lantz is a cursed bard who has to adventure out beyond his kingdom to try to convince monster girls to fall in love with him. Why? Because the Paladin Queen of the kingdom shattered his soul and it’s the only way to restore his spirit to his body!

Lantz can try to romance eight different characters ranging from a fox girl, zombie, slime girl, goblin, succubus, and even an eldritch horror inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft to name a few.

Inspired by companies like Telltale Games and NIS America, Soulless Wonder is a dating sim with meaningful choices to make and complex characters to get to know. Even more amazing, Rod Espinosa of The Courageous Princess fame is doing the artwork! He’s working for companies such as Marvel and Dark Horse comics in the past, as well as being nominated for both an Eisener and Ignatz award! The news just keeps getting better with composer Joel Steudler creating the music for the game. He’s best known for creating music packs with Degica for RPG Maker in recent years.

Shadow Of Mordor Sequel Announced Today – New Trailer

Posted on February 27, 2017 by Les Major

Shadow Of War Trailer 1

The rumors are true! Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the official title of Monolith Productions next game in the series. I LOVED Shadow of Mordor and it’s certainly a title worth checking out to this day. The sequel continues the storyline and really begs to question if we’ll follow the canon at all, or if this really is a wild new tale of Talion versus Sauron where anything can happen. The original seemed to take liberties, but it’s still great just getting to explore a new vision of Tolkien’s fantasy world.

Check out the trailer below! The game is on the way for August 22nd in North America!

Leaked Mega Bloks Set Reveals Potential Destiny Tower Battle

Posted on February 10, 2017 by Les Major

Destiny Cabal Rumors

There’s nothing set in stone about toy sets. Manufacturers aren’t bound to make products that follow series canon perfectly. So gamers shouldn’t look too far into this latest announcement about leaked Mega Bloks Destiny sets, however one interesting detail has emerged. One set focuses on a battle that occurs against the Cabal in the Tower on Earth.

Many are speculating this is a nod to Destiny 2. Other leaked information has suggested that the Cabal would be a major part of the sequel’s story. Considering they took a back seat so far in all of the raids from the original game, that assumption doesn’t seem far fetched. What I would like to see, and what I really hope is happening here, is that this is the epic conclusion to Destiny 1.

Think about it for a minute. Speculation has been that the Tower wouldn’t be the social area of Destiny 2. The sequel is seemingly about moving on and exploring new areas. What better way for the original game to wrap up would there be than to have the Tower fall? Let alone it sounds like you can’t bring your character along into the new game, or at least equipment doesn’t carry over. Again, all speculation since we do not have official word on any of this yet. If that is true however, the Tower falling could be an epic set piece to go out on. Your previous hero(s) could potentially have given their lives to save the city below in an all out battle against the Cabal. Destiny 2 could be about taking up arms against the Cabal and fighting back after this confrontation.

Whatever is going on, I’m putting in my two cents and betting on that. Just because I think that would be an epic wrap up to the game we’ve all come to know and love these past two years. So let’s see where this goes! For more details on the other leaked Destiny Mega Bloks sets check out VG247’s post.

theHunter: Call Of The Wild Reveals Layton Lake Trailer

Posted on February 10, 2017 by Les Major

theHunter Layton Lake

Continuing our coverage of Expansive Worlds beautiful woodlands simulator that I’ll be wandering through soon, we have a new trailer highlighting the Layton Lake district of the reserve. The hunting simulator which promises to be very immersive and detailed will feature a huge landscape for gamers to explore. Obviously the main goal is to track animals for sport, however the scenery is just too wondrous to ignore.

Built on the engine used in Just Cause 3, theHunter: Call Of The Wild boasts some very impressive visuals. Especially for an open world game. We’re eager to dive into the actual gameplay aspects but it’s hard to ignore the subtle things from this trailer. Even the nod to multiplayer at the end shows the group of hunters flattening out tall grass as they progress through it. Is this just cosmetic? It’s a nice touch.

With less than a week until launch, theHunter: Call Of The Wild is promising to be an ambitious title!

LEGO Batman Builds Up The Lego Dimensions Collection Today

Posted on February 10, 2017 by Les Major

LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack

To coincide with the release of The LEGO Batman Movie hitting theaters today, fans can pick up the LEGO Batman Movie story pack for LEGO Dimensions! We absolutely loved the Fantastic Beasts story pack and if the previous content is any indication, this additional content is just getting better and better!

The LEGO Batman Movie story pack comes with a physical Batgirl and Robin minifig. You know, that cute lovable dorky Robin from the trailers? Not just that but you also get a Batcomputer setup to build for the LEGO Dimensions Portal as well! So it’s a replacement portal like the previous story packs included. Also included is a new 3 in 1 vehicle, the Batwing! It can also be rebuilt into The Black Thunder and the Bat-Tank.

Also like the previous packs you receive six all new levels AND an adventure world to explore. Plus of course there is a battle arena unlocked as well for multiplayer.

Released as well today was the Knight Rider LEGO set! It’s just a fun pack, but so was the A-Team set which contained an immersive adventure world is just full of content and references to the TV show. One of my favorites, the Gremlins team pack was also a wonderful experience from the classic movie to explore the adventure world of. So you can bet Knight Rider is going to be a trip you’ll want to buckle up for.

Bleed 2 Title

If you haven’t played Bleed, you’ve really missed out on some indie game magic. With solid controls, slowing time mechanics, and free aim shooting it’s a wild ride! Bleed 2 looks to be even more of that action with lots of improvements. Of course we’ll be covering the game with a review coming up soon and hopefully I’ll get some video on the go as well!

Take on the role of Wryn, the worlds greatest (and only remaining) hero! With an invading force of villains to battle, she’s ready to yet again take on anything they can throw at her. Wryn’s ability to slow time, air-dodge, and free aim really creates some dizzying moments in a barrage of bullet-hell action. With new and larger set pieces, that thrill ride is just going to get even more intense in this sequel!

The Intro To Torment: Tides of Numenera Has Me Hooked

Posted on February 6, 2017 by Les Major

Torment TON Title

In a pleasant surprise today, inXile provided me with an Early Access key to Torment: Tides of Numenera. I have to admit, it’s taking a LOT of willpower to not just get back into the game and ignore my regular duties. One kicker that is keeping me away is I don’t know if my early access save will carry over or not, so there is that at least. That and responsibility and all that good stuff of course.

The best thing about Torment is how it feels like an early 2000’s RPG, and that truly is a plus. Built on the tech that brought us Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment, Torment takes on that air of mystery that makes it a worthy spiritual successor to the Planescape title of 1999. You feel like you’re in an alien world and despite being a game with combat mechanics, it feels more like an adventure game. Bits and pieces of memories come back to you as your character struggles to remember a past that may not even be their own. The game even begins by allowing you to react to some of these memories to craft your skills and class.

Having no understanding of the universe, and actually actively avoiding much news of Torment to have it be a very fresh experience, it was rewarding to go through the character creation process with horse blinders on. I just settled for what my decisions lead me to and accepted that my character was just what the intro gave me from my choices. In the end I had a curious individual, seemingly interested in psychic abilities and otherworldly creatures. She could read minds a little as well, giving glints into just what characters were feeling about what they said in conversations.

Considering that much like it’s spiritual predecessor the game is quite dialogue heavy so far, this was a preferred setup. Really it seems you can play the game to your liking from the limited posts I’ve read so far though. Torment feels original, and that’s the best part of it. Not knowing what the world around you is like makes the game interesting.

Otherwise it’s your typical Baldur’s Gate like setup with turn based combat. I haven’t gotten into the leveling system yet but you do seem to gain experience as you go, at least from what I read on some of my skills. If these sorts of titles interest you, Torment: Tides of Numenera is definitely a title to keep an eye on. The February 28th release date on Steam is coming up fast! With over four million dollars raised on Kickstarter to bring this title to life, you know fan expectation is high and eager. I’m very much delighted with what I’ve played so far!

Lego Dimensions Goonies

Even more action is coming to the wonder world of LEGO Dimensions! At least two all new sets are on the way for May 9th and those include Goonies and Lego City. The coolest news about these releases? Of course it’s the adventure worlds! We love those and it’s great to see even more characters that will unlock fresh new adventure worlds to explore. Hermione is also getting her own figure that comes with Buckbeak! You know, Hagrid’s hippogriff friend from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of the Azkaban.

Check out the details straight from WB below along with the set images.

The Goonies Level Pack includes a complete level of The Goonies gameplay where players can help Sloth and Chunk escape the Fratelli hideout and join the rest of the Goonies on their search for One Eyed Willy’s treasure. Players can use Sloth’s Super Strength to smash through walls or play as Chunk and use his infamous Truffle Shuffle. The rebuildable One-Eyed Willy’s Pirate Ship will sail on water and can also be built into the Fanged Fortune and the Inferno Cannon; while the rebuildable Skeleton Organ has Sonar Smash abilities and can also be built into the Skeleton Jukebox and Skele-Turkey for added game play capabilities. Sloth provides access to a new The Goonies Battle Arena, and also the Adventure World where players can explore Mikey’s House, Inferno Cove and the Goon Docks. Once the level is complete, players will be able to replay through the game and other levels as any of the seven other Goonies characters to solve additional puzzles and access more collectibles in their journey through the LEGO multiverse.

Players can extend their wizarding adventures in LEGO Dimensions with the Harry Potter Fun Pack which includes a Hermione Granger LEGO minifigure. She can cast magical spells such as Wingardium Leviosa to levitate objects and Lumos to light up dark places. She also allows players to unlock the Harry Potter Battle Arena for a competitive match, along with the Adventure World where they can explore locations in Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Players can build the 3-in-1 rideable Buckbeak the Hippogriff and use its Stomp Attack to smash Silver LEGO bricks, then rebuild it into the Giant Owl and the Fierce Falcon for additional in-game abilities.

Players can help stop crime in the LEGO Dimensions multiverse with the LEGO City Fun Pack featuring a Chase McCain LEGO minifigure. Chase can become a Miner to break Silver LEGO bricks or a Fireman to use his Water Beam to put out fires. Gamers can use his LEGO City Detective Scanner to track down bad guys and change his disguise to unlock more abilities. In the LEGO City Adventure World, there are new areas to explore like Blackwell’s moon base and the LEGO City Police Department. Players can also compete with up to three of their friends in the LEGO City Battle Arena. Additionally, Chase’s 3-in-1 Police Helicopter can be built to fire off bolts, then rebuild it into the Police Hovercraft and Police Plane for additional in-game abilities.

Splatoon 2 Has A Single Player Story Set Two Years After First Game

Posted on January 29, 2017 by Les Major

Splatoon 2 Title

WHAT? Where was this news at the Nintendo Switch reveal? That’s right! I heard officially from a Nintendo PR rep at our recent Switch press event that yes, Splatoon 2 will indeed have a single player story campaign just like the first. So far we’ve only seen the multiplayer battle and some of the new weapons making this news HUGE! Splatoon 2 isn’t just a new block of updates on a new console, it really is a true sequel!

In my upcoming video interview you’ll get to see our conversation firsthand. I was mainly trying to see if there were further details like a new hub world or something amazing like apartments for your character. Neither of those details were confirmed or denied, but instead our gracious host did fill me in on the fact that there is more to do than just PVP battles in the new Splatoon title.

I know, it was probably to be expected, but now it’s CONFIRMED! Even when I was talking to other reps at the event, they were surprised to hear about the single player campaign. So I don’t know just how new this news is but a quick search online doesn’t reveal much about this confirmation at all! So there you have it folks. Stay fresh!

“Arms” Surprises As One Of The Best Games At Switch Press Event

Posted on January 28, 2017 by Les Major

We’ve all seen the footage from the Nintendo Switch Reveal. Gamers have questioned just what was going to be worthwhile with this new console. Was it going to be the big new thing? Then there’s all that footage of that wacky game “Arms” with various boxing fighters with extendable arms! What in the WORLD is going on?

So today I got to check out the Nintendo Switch at a press event in downtown Toronto. Of course I was skeptical of Arms but I wanted to give it a go. If nothing else to have some video footage of myself flailing around while trying to play the game. Instead, I walked away thinking it was one of the two top games I enjoyed at the event!

No joke! I’m not being paid to say this. This isn’t some sort of ploy, it’s my personal opinion. I enjoyed Arms and it controls surprisingly well with very relaxed motions by the player. You don’t need to swing around wildly, though you can if you like. Otherwise you can play the game calm, cool, and in control of the bout.

First off, holding both the JoyCon controllers separately and attached with wrist straps is very comfortable! They’re incredibly light and comfortable. I think my wife put it best that they clearly seem to be made of plastic or the like, but they almost feel easier on your hands than you’d expect. In Arms you hold the controllers upright with the joysticks facing each other. This leaves your thumbs on top for surprisingly fitting control of the triggers and L/R buttons. These are actually used in the game to control your fighter along with motion controls.

JoyCon Controllers

Across the games I played, I experienced the rumble of these JoyCon controllers. As I’m sure you’ve seen, Nintendo is making a push to encourage gamers to take note of how they feel. I can’t recall if Arms did indeed use them, but I’m pretty sure it did. In general, it does oddly have that feeling of the “ice cubes in a glass” sort of expression that was mentioned in the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer. It’s like there are more rumble points or what not in the controllers. With how light they are too, it makes the feeling more noticeable. The best way I can describe it is different. It’s more of a unique experience.

Arms itself is controlled by leaning the JoyCon’s in the direction you want your fighter to move. You tilt them forward, backward, or to the sides to move. Combining that with jumping by clicking the R button at the top I do believe, and the L button to dash, it gives you a good range of moment. Also by tilting the JoyCon’s at each other you can block. The best part about this is, you feel in control. Wii Boxing was fun, but at times you sort of felt out of rhythm and like you were just flailing and the game was responding to you doing something, but wasn’t always sure what. When you move in Arms, your character moves. Really, I want more games with the controls Arms uses. I could see piloting a mech with the JoyCons like this and I really liked the feeling!

Mechanica I believe was the girl I first played as, which probably helped me get that mecha feel. Punching, much like the movement controls, just feels good! You jab or twist your punch in and your character reacts. Considering your long extendable arms in the game, they sort of track the other character to land each blow, especially across the arena. I’d need more hands on time to see just how you time your punches to beat down your opponent, but things got pretty neat. At times I missed, others my punches arced around and landed right on! I don’t blame the controls for this, I blame getting used to playing the game. However, I had some pretty sweet moments. One stage I was moving to position a pillar between my fighter and their opponent. Then from there I was arcing punches AROUND that pillar to still smack at them! Of course to keep things fair after a few volleys of punches, the pillar collapsed.

Arms Mechanica

But wait, there’s more! Punching with both fists at the same time performs a grab move on your opponent. If not blocked, you pull them in and deliver a devastating wallop! A barrage of punches that land is probably just as effective, and the game does show damage numbers to indicate just how much you’re hurting your foe. However, with a grab you get in all that damage all at once if they don’t move out of your way and just let your gangly arms miss them. On top of all that you can build up a super move and unleash that with the triggers held at the same time. During this phase you can unleash a barrage of devastating punches in a row as fast as you can. Your opponent has super moves as well, so you’ll need to learn to dodge out of the way of their attacks.

Of course everyone at the event was there to make sure we had fun and the staff gave us lots of encouragement as we played our games. By the time I was making my rounds it was late in the day and everyone was pretty tired out. When I made it to the Arms display, the attendant that we got set up with was happy to show me how the game worked but was quite thrilled when we got into it. Sure, everyone wants to try out the games and just get a taste of it. It was near the end and no one was lining up so I got right into Arms. By the end our attendant was cheering me on as as struggled against Master Mummy who seemed to have two hands that almost resembled Bullet Bill’s for fists! As I tracked around the arena and managed to put some distance between us with those pillars I mentioned earlier, we were down to landing just one hit to win. My right hook went wide! Out in the open I was concerned this was game over. Then he faltered just for a moment and my left jab won the match!

Arms Mummy

It really was satisfying. Both the quality of the game and controls, as well as genuinely seeing our attendant getting so into the game. Our experience with Arms showed me there is more to it than flailing your arms madly at the TV. Instead you really are able to come up with some plan of attack and make your fighting style your own. Want to hop in the air constantly and pummel your opponent from above? Go for it. Is staying distant so you can time their punches and scoot to the side to avoid getting hit while landing well placed jabs? You can do that too! Want to just click dash and run in, punching like mad while hoping for a good outcome? Do that too! The game really is more than just Wii Boxing for the Switch with extendable arms. Let along the charm of the characters really drew me in. I knew nothing of the robot suit piloting Mechanica but I adored her.

The big take away from all this is that I want Arms. I want to own the game. It’s a game I would play and enjoy. Sure, I don’t know much about it yet and haven’t even begun to research the title, but I enjoy the gameplay! Playing Arms on the Switch feels good, and I want to experience that again. Sure, I want games like Zelda that I can plunk my butt down on the couch and explore hours upon hours of shrines throughout Hyrule. I also want to just get into Arms and do those over exaggerated movements that aren’t needed but just feel so good because the game reacts so well to my motions. It’s cool to see the evolution of motion controls, the comfort of the Nintendo Switch JoyCons, and most of all another new IP from Nintendo that I genuinely want to play!

Arms Fighters

Nintendo gave me a ton of options today to play anything I wanted. I’m glad I decided to give that silly stretchy arms title a chance. It made a lasting impression and showed off the Nintendo Switch very well!

theHunter: Call Of The Wild Has Some Amazing Visuals

Posted on January 26, 2017 by Les Major

theHunter Call Of The Wild

Sport hunting titles seem like they’ve been around forever. I remember back in the 90s playing Deer Hunting simulators that felt like DOOM mods. It’s a genre that has quite a history. Even GTA 5 had deer hunting, let alone the entire hunting section in Yakuza 5. That long lineage makes it difficult to create something new. theHunter: Call Of The Wild is a game that has been in development for a decade, with much of it’s development cycle coming from Expansive Worlds free to play version of theHunter.

One thing I find to be a wonderful addition about theHunter series that will hopefully carry over into this new release is that you are also armed with a camera. It may sound silly to mention with a game that is geared towards hunting very specifically, but it is a way to open up this amazing terrain to a wider audience. I don’t think there is any reward per say for photographing the wildlife and beautiful surroundings, but it’s such a large and lush environment that it is a wonderful option to give players.

The game boasts 50 square miles of varied terrain to explore. It sounds like this title is even rendered in the same engine as Just Cause 3! That’s a lot of natural splendor to take in. Anyone who knows me knows I just want to wander off and explore this vast wilderness. Just look at the trailer below! That’s all in engine content!

Naturally it’s not all exploring the forest and potential photography. This is a selection of rifles, handguns and even bows to use in the game that can be customized with scopes and various ammunition types. Your character can also unlock new skills and equipment along the way. As usual, the game allows you to track animals as well or even use scents and callers to lure them out. I haven’t experienced the hunting stealth aspects of the game yet but we do hope to get some hands on time soon to see how theHunter: Call Of The Wild plays.

The release date for Steam has been set for February 16th, 2017.

First 11 – Check Out Our Torn Tales Gameplay Footage

Posted on January 19, 2017 by Les Major

Torn Tales First 11

Today, I’m starting a new YouTube series to show off some of the PC titles we tackle. Each video will focus on the first eleven minutes of gameplay. Odds are though if I don’t keep track of time again, there will be tons of additional content as well. This first episode takes a look at Torn Tales, a sort of diablo-esque title that tasks gamers to play as Snow White, Robin Hood, and Dr. Jekyll in a party together.

Yes, I know the music audio and my dialogue are unfortunately at the same level. I’ll have to be sure to correct that in future videos. Or even record a separate dialogue track. Either way, things will improve for future content and I’ll get them as fun and clear as our Twitch streams many of you have been enjoying already.

Our trek with Torn Tales took these three fabled fighters through a forest in this intro area. It sounds like you possibly can find treasure chests along the way, but the only ones I nabbed came from a boss and a group of enemies. There are branching paths though and boy do you need to explore them! I recorded much more than the first eleven minutes, which I’ll be sharing as well, so you’ll get to see me progress along, give up on exploration (and extra XP) only to be in a really tough battle against the second boss of the game which I needed just a touch more power to get through.

That may sound rough, but the developer is listening on the Steam discussion board it seems and updates have been forthcoming. If nothing else, I’d look at Torn Tales as a game you can play all the way through, but it’s sort of like an early access game since changes are on the way. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a good title here I found, and if I could have just DPS’d the Big Bad Wolf a bit more, I’d have beat him on a couple occasions.

Anyway, give it a look at take a gander at the first eleven minutes, of Torn Tales.

Rising World Is A Fun Minecraft Alternative To Explore

Posted on January 18, 2017 by Les Major

There are tons of Minecraft like titles out there and it’s hard to tell what isn’t just more of the same. Back in the earlier days of the series, many indie titles filled the gap of similar games on Xbox 360 before the titan of voxel building made the leap to consoles. There’s one thing that I always wanted in a game of this type though, and that was smoother landscapes. EverQuest Next: Landmark had a style like that, but unfortunately it seems to have gone through some complex times and won’t be around much longer. However Rising World is in early access and already it’s looking like a wonderful game in this style to play.

The big thing I always wanted out of Minecraft was exploration. In general though, I feel that it’s more about building and online play than really getting out there and seeing the world. Rising World however has given me some neat surprises in my first few experiences that it makes me want to wander. One of the latest updates even adds dungeons! Currently they are just empty ruins to explore, but enemies are on the way. An abandoned shack I found, which is tied to that update, did contain a treasure chest and the remains of a skeleton.

I like that the trees in Rising World use physics as they fall. It’s something nice that has been included in some other games, like The Forest I do believe, but it’s neat to see the tree actually topple and roll down a hill. Then you chop it up into logs and craft them into lumber. With the game having smoother polygonal mesh over the voxel world it’s build upon, everything feels more like an adventure in a non-building first person open world game. But you can indeed build in Rising World as well.

Rising World Crafting

Having only just started the game I’m not too sure about things like smoothing terrain to build a happy little home on. Which of course I’m sure I could just make a block foundation for instead. However Rising World does come with an in game journal to give you some gameplay info as well. It is your usual fare of crafting, building, and the like, but with a more natural looking world and some neat stuff to explore. With a variety of biomes and some neat stuff to create it’s a neat place to let your imagination run wild for awhile. That and the game is still in early access as well so further updates are on the way. You can check out Rising World right now on Steam.

I’m enjoying the single player aspect and from what I’ve heard that’s a favored focus for the game. I have yet to try out multiplayer however.
