Nintendo Holiday Download (12.25.14)

Posted on December 30, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

The holiday season isn’t exactly a hot bed of new video game news but Nintendo doesn’t really take time off. Over Christmas the Big N released a whole slew of classic games from their back catalogue onto the 3DS and Wii U virtual consoles. If you’ve got some downtime between now and the inevitable New Years Day hangover  then why not sink some time into the original Mario Bros?

Hackers Say Merry Christmas By DDOSing PlayStation Network

Posted on December 25, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

If you got a brand new PlayStation 4 for Christmas I hope you weren’t planning on using it on the PlayStation Network today as it appears that PSN is down due to a distributed denial of service attack. It appears that users all across North America are having issues logging into PSN on their consoles leading some to believe that hackers are targeting the PlayStation Network login servers.

A group of “hackers” on twitter calling themselves “Lizard Squad” have taken responsibility for today’s outage. They took to social media to request that their twitter account receive more than 10,000 re-tweets before they would cease their attack.

We are able to verify that attempts to sign into PSN from western Canada are being met with a message of “The Service Is Undergoing Maintenance”. At the time of writing the PlayStation Store website was also unavailable.

As soon as PSN comes back online we’ll update this post.

Fairune | Review

Posted on December 16, 2014 by Jason Nason

Fairune is an 8-bit looking action RPG with a very basic setup and gameplay mechanic. It’s simple to play and brings you right back to the nostalgia of the NES days, though this game is even easier to play than even the original The Legend of Zelda.

Find it too hard to press a button to swing and attack an enemy? Well don’t worry. All you have to do is run into an enemy, or have them run into you, and you’ll attack them and take damage. It actually works pretty well and makes the game a bit more quickly paced.

If you’ve played CIRCLE’s earlier game Witch & Hero you’ll know what to expect from this mechanic, and I actually like it a lot because you can focus more on getting around and less on constantly attacking the hordes of monsters which are everywhere.

Posted on December 10, 2014 by Les Major

Creative writing inspirational title Elegy for a Dead World surprisingly appeared on Steam today weeks before it’s expected 1st quarter of 2015 release date. This is the official release though and no mistake! Elegy is an interesting almost educational software title, encouraging users to be creative and craft a story about alien worlds as they explore them.

The almost madlib style that writers are presented prompts in allows for encouraged creativity. There is also a freeform selection that lets players input any text they like. We gave Elegy a run through and will have a review coming soon. Till then, read on for the press release details announced today.Read More

Explore Nearly Fifteen Minutes of Uncharted 4 Gameplay Footage

Posted on December 6, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

During Sony’s PlayStation Experience keynote presentation Naughty Dog showed off the first gameplay demo for Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End. In this demo we see Nathan Drake climb and sneak his way through a lush jungle island. There are quite a few awesome mechanics at play – I’m not sure if they are scripted or contextual but they still impress – like when Drake uses a rope to swing across a gap and knock out an enemy right before grabbing the guys gun while in mid swing.

We know this demonstration was played in real-time on Sony’s stage because at one point the person playing fell through the game world! If you can stomach a groaning one liner or sarcastic remark approximately every minute I highly recommend checking out this trailer.

A Thief’s End is still early in development. We don’t have a solid release date yet for this PlayStation 4 exclusive but I’m sure we will see more of Nathan Drake at next year’s E3.

Metal Gear Solid V: Online Features Mechs & Adorable Puppies!

Posted on December 6, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Konami unveiled the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: Online last night during the Video Game Awards. This first glimpse at online componet of the Phantom Pain comes with the tagline – “Tactical Team Operations”.

In the trailer we see several glimpses of new gameplay mechanics such as one player taking on the role of Big Boss (similar to how MGS 4 online had game modes were one player played as Naked Snake) while other players battle it out. Other note worthy additions include an adorable puppy replacing the porn magazines and a mechanized single occupant walker that Snake uses to wreak havoc.

Make sure you watch until the end because there’s a pretty awesome cameo from a character we haven’t heard much about in terms of their inclusion in The Phantom PainMGS V: The Phantom Pain is expected to be release sometime before the summer of 2015 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.Read More
