Mario Kart 8 One Month Away

Posted on April 30, 2014 by Jason Nason

One month from today, Mario Kart 8 will be released for the Nintendo Wii U, and in preparation for that release Nintendo presented a brand new Nintendo Direct video that announced some additional news, including a Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle, a free downloadable game offer for Wii U owners who buy Mario Kart 8, details about online features, new characters and new items.

“Everyone loves Mario Kart,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “It’s a franchise that brings people together for fun at a family gathering, a frenzied race against friends or just an afternoon break at the office. The numerous new features of Mario Kart 8 make this the most ambitious version yet, and one that will have players of all skill levels racing for the checkered flag.”

Nintendo Unveils their E3 Plans

Posted on April 29, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo will be tweeking the way they present their news and game at this year’s E3 event. Last year the company broke away from the traditional press presentation in an auditorium in favour of a Nintendo Direct video presentation.

This year Nintendo will deliver their news including a new format for unveiling news: the Nintendo Digital Event; a Super Smash Bros. tournament; a full slate of live, in-depth game demos from the Nintendo booth.

“We demonstrated last year that we are never afraid to reinvent a proven tactic or to break completely new ground if we believe it will provide the best experience for our fans, followers and partners,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and chief operating officer. “So, whether you’re attending E3 in person or joining online, there’s an amazing lineup of games, experiences and events coming your way.”

The overall theme of Nintendo’s E3 will be “Play Nintendo.”

Sea Battle | Review

Posted on April 27, 2014 by Jason Nason

Teyon’s newest game is for the good old Nintendo DSi and the DSiWare service, something that has all but been abandoned by most developers. And with some of the games being released in the eShop looking like they could have easily been DSiWare titles, including lacking 3D support, that is a shame.

But Teyon’s Sea Battle, while solid in the gameplay, game mechanics and look, has a few quirks which drag it under.

If you’ve ever played the board game Battleship you’ll know exactly what to expect from this title. The game isn’t marketed that way though as the developers clearly don’t have the license to do so, but that is what you’re getting. So if you’ve ever played it you’ll have no trouble getting started, though there are a few neat additions to the game. More on that in a bit.

Major sponsors such as Capcom, Namco Bandai, and others are responsible for the development of some of the world’s most famous franchises in gaming, and are showcased at a central tournament featuring the top fighting talent from across the world. With major prizepools, fighting games are now reaching a platform that can be compared to traditional eSports.

Each week, I’ll be posting interviews I’ve had the pleasure of conducting with members of the fighting game community. The interviews will touch upon their history in the FGC, where they got their start, and what they’d like to see from video games in general.

This week’s guest is the man coming strong from a 9th place finish at NCR, Alex Myers.Read More

Governor of Poker | Review

Posted on April 20, 2014 by Jason Nason

Every so often I am tasked with reviewing a game that I’m no good at. It doesn’t happen that often as I can often find my way through any type of game. Sports, platform, action, shooter, RPG, whatever the genre I can get it done. This is one of those games that isn’t really hard to play, I’m just no good at it.

Teyon’s Governor of Poker blends a good old fashioned Texas Hold’Em style poker with some RPG elements. Your goal in the game isn’t simply to play poker, which this game does well. You are also tasked with building your fortune and taking over the town. The game takes place in the desert town of San Saba where you begin your journey to building your reputation and riches up to take over the whole state of Texas.

UnEpic | Review

Posted on April 14, 2014 by Les Major

If you’re a fan of Metroidvania titles, you know, games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for example, UnEpic is a wonderful exploration title you’ll probably enjoy very much! I’ve already gushed a little bit about the game before, but there is a lot more to be said about the game itself. Available both on Steam and on the Wii-U eShop, I took a look at the console release that is available thanks to EnjoyUp publishing the title on Nintendo’s latest system. The best part that I’ve already noted is how much UnEpic feels like you’re living a comedic RPG web comic.Read More

Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers Announced

Posted on April 12, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Wizards of the Coast have announced the next entry in the long running Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers series. Several new features have already been announced for this year’s iteration including expanded deck customization, a brand new deck building option and the appearance of cards from the Magic 2015 core set.  The single player campaign centers around a conflict with Garruk Wildspeaker, surely only the most cunning players will be able defend against his might.

New features aren’t the only improvement that WotC have in store for Magic 2015, for the first time Xbox One owners will be able to get in on the collectable card action. Duels of the Planeswalkers will also be released for Xbox 360, iPad, Steam and Google Android. Unfortunately Magic 2015 won’t be dealt out to Sony consoles this time around, PlayStation fans will have to make do with  last year’s game.

Check out the debut trailer for Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers after the jump.Read More

Persona 4 Now Available On PlayStation 2 Classics

Posted on April 12, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

One of our favorite games here @ BrokenJoysticks is Atlus’ 2008 masterpiece Persona 4, why else would we have given the game a perfect 10.0? If you haven’t played the enhanced Persona 4: Golden on PlayStation Vita and don’t own the PlayStation 2 original then you owe it to yourself to pick up this great RPG on PS3 via PlayStation Classics.

Atlus released the PS2 version of Persona 4 on the PlayStation Network this past week for $9.99. Quite a steal considering the original physical version costs double that and Golden still has a $30.00 price tag at most retailers. So grab your persona of choice and get ready to be sucked into the television, it’s time to relive one of the greatest RPG we’ve played in the last half decade.

Tomodachi Life Finally Sees North American Release

Posted on April 10, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo surprised everyone, me at the very least, when they released information that their Mii life simulation game will finally be released in North America. The game has been out for sometime in Japan and has been wildly successful out there, selling more than 5.5 million copies. I had long hopes that the game would finally see a release here, but honestly didn’t think it would actually happen. Here’s my article last year about the Japanese release.

The announcement was made in a special Nintendo Direct. Take a look at that below:
