Grand Theft Auto V | Review

Posted on November 8, 2013 by Jason Nason

Ever since I began playing video games so many years ago there is one game that I always wanted to play. My idea for an ideal game was one where you could live out a life as a character in a city or town. You could go anywhere and do pretty much anything. You could have a job, go to the store, drive around, talk with and interact with people and so much more. The Grand Theft Auto series is that game.

I never played much of the original two titles but it was the franchise’s third game, which brought the series into 3D that really impressed me. Playing through Liberty City where you could follow the story of the game or just walk around and explore really spoke to me.Read More

Say Goodbye to Ubisoft’s UPlay ‘Service’

Posted on November 6, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Whether you call them ‘online passes’ or ‘services’ initiatives like Electronic Art’s Project ten dollar and Ubisoft’s U-Play platform have been despised by some in the gaming community for gating off content from those who buy their games used. It looks like Ubisoft is following in the footsteps of EA and cancelling their U-Play passport service as well as refunding all those who purchased the pass for use with a used copy of the recently released Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. If you’ve purchased a used copy of Black Flag keep reading!

All of this seems to stem from the small controversy surrounding the use of the U-Play Passport in the latest animus adventure. Entering the pack-in code granted players access to a resource collecting mechanic called ‘Edward’s Fleet’. Similar to other resource collection methods in previous entries, Fleet allows Players to send their hired hands off on the far seas to collect in-game currency. The big difference is that in prior games these mini games were never locked, as they provide invaluable cash used to upgrade your fellow assassins as well as the main protagonist.

Ubisoft cited the continuing connectivity seen in modern games, even during their single player content as the reason for the discontinuation of U-Play. They’ve also stated that in the future purchasing an Ubisoft title will grant players access to all features.

PlayStation 3 Surpasses 80 Million Units

Posted on November 6, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sony has sold a lot of PlayStation 3 consoles, 80 million worldwide as of November 2nd according to a recent press release from the console manufacturer. Pretty impressive considering the console launched in November 2006, on average they sold more than 11 million units a year! While everyone is talking about the PlayStation 4, sometimes it is important to look back and see what came before.

Some major milestones outlined by Sony: The launch of PlayStation Plus – which has been providing discounts to PlayStation Store content for over 3 years. Who of course could forget the Instant Games Collection either, every month Sony releases multiple  games for free to PS Plus subscribers for the past two years, for $60 a year it’s not a bad deal. Lastly, the PlayStation Store launched in November 2006 providing free online game play to every console.

I’m a huge proponent of Sony’s free games imitative and surely players who don’t already own a PS3 or can’t find a PlayStation may consider picking up a PS3 this holiday. With the launch of the PS4, I am a little shocked we haven’t seen a price cut just before the holidays. In Canada the PS3 sells for $249.99 and is available bundled with NHL 14 and a 250GB hard drive.

PlayStation Network Will Be Down Tomorrow

Posted on November 6, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

The PlayStation Network will be down for maintenance tomorrow from 11am to 7pm Eastern Standard Time. If you’re planning to download the latest free PS Plus Games during this time you’re out of luck. Sony says that the online gameplay will still be functional, so your planned 7 hour marathon of Call of Duty: Ghosts can still go ahead.

I wonder if this will be the last scheduled maintenance before Sony releases the PlayStation 4 next Friday, November 15th.

Sony wrote the following on the PlayStation forums, outlining the scheduled maintenance:

We wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that there is a planned maintenance for PlayStation Network scheduled for Thursday, November 7thfrom 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM Pacific Time (11 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern). To clarify, this is a 7 hour maintenance.

If you’ve signed onto PSN over the past few days, you’ll still be able to play online and access apps during this period, but you may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, and Account Management as these services will be unavailable. Be sure to sign in now if you wish to access the Network during this maintenance window.

Wii Mini Lands in US This Holiday Season

Posted on November 5, 2013 by Jason Nason

Over here in Canada we got the little red Wii Mini last year but the little system that could is making it’s debut in the United States this holiday season.

Nintendo is launching the Wii mini console in the US and will only cost $99.99. Not only that but the system will come packed with Super Mario Kart Wii. When the system was released in Canada last December the console was released as a stand alone without a pack in game, although the Wii Mini started shipping in Canada with Mario Kart Wii as of September of this year.

If you somehow DON’T already own a Wii this is a great choice at a great value.

Nintendo Stops Swapnote

Posted on November 5, 2013 by Jason Nason

Just a few days ago Nintendo stopped some of the service for Swapnote, the visual message swapping service for the Nintendo 3DS. I must say that I’ve never SENT a swapnote though I have enjoyed receving the notes from Nintendo.

The issue stems from some inappropriate message being sent through the service, which Nintendo can’t prevent. Take a look at the full text of the letter posted on Nintendo.com. The letter was also posted as an alert directly sent to 3DS systems.

Guide Fates From Celestia Tomorrow In NIS’ Latest Game

Posted on November 4, 2013 by Les Major

If you’re a fan of NIS titles you’ve spent a lot of time in the Netherworld. Tomorrow it’s time to take a trip to the flip side as a teenager who ends up winning a contest to become “god” of Celestia in The Guided Fate Paradox! Players take on the role of Renya Kagurazaka, a Japanese high school student, as he’s tutored into taking control of Celestia… or at least you’re section of it.

Unlike previous tactical titles set it what seems to be the same universe, The Guided Fate Paradox uses a hybrid rogue-like style of gameplay along with the view and special moves you’ve come to expect from Disgaea. Your adventure is split into chapters, again like Disgaea, but actual gameplay for each area feels a bit longer, sort of like going through a few item world levels since the rogue-like areas of Guided Fate are multi-level. What’s up with that? Read on for more!Read More

Humble Bundle No Longer Offering Steam Keys

Posted on November 2, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Low cost games are a great deal for the frugal and casual among us but it looks like one of the key sources of low cost PC games, the Humble Bundle, have changed their terms of service. Donating a few bucks for charity used to score you a few steam keys for some great games but it looks like the team behind the Humble Bundle has decided to discontinue the practice of giving away steam codes. Instead, donators are now presented with the option of clicking a link on their order confirmation screen that will add the games to their account through the Steam client.

Originally pointed out by watchful users on Reddit, the change in policy was noticed by potential buyers of the latest bundle featuring Team 17’s Worms franchise. As several of the users point out, there was a very shaky second hand market where individuals were able to sell some of the “beat the average” titles for a much higher price. This is especially true for some of the previous bundles, like the THQ Bundle, which featured $60+ of games for as little as $1. Even though a very popular Steam Key trading community emerged from the Humble scene, this could be a move to disarm those looking to make a profit.Read More
